Car experts - Is putting gas in a running vehicle actually dangerous?

Obviously we've all heard this numerous times, and many gas stations even have signs that tell us to turn our engines off.
But how in the hell is it actually dangerous.
Is a running engine at a gas station any different than a kid listening to his iPod on a plane?

I've sat in a car while someone filled up and forgot to stop his engine. nothing happened.

Kinda, but not really. A properly functioning gas pump has a vapor recovery system that should prevent any fumes from leaving the tank and igniting. The big issue is that you're going to throw a CEL if you do it.

Nah, more dangerous not to ground yourself before grabbing the pump handle.

well, gasoline vapors are heavier than air, so I would think that it would be possible that gasoline vapors forced out of your tank while filling could travel along the ground and be ignited by your car if it were running...
I have never heard of it happening, but I could see it being at least plausible...
fwiw, most common practices (i.e. turning your car off when filling with gasoline, no electronics on airplanes, etc.) are the result of some tragedy that actually occurred somewhere...

You can do it in a diesel all day long

Hasn't blown me up yet, and I hot fuel cars, tractors, ATVs, even hot fueled airplanes back in the day.

It's not dangerous but I still don't like to do it

Diesel will ignite too. Just no where near as easy. Stati. Electricity is the bigger fear.

I do it all the time. I'm not gonna sit in my car cold while I'm filling up

But can you come up with a good reasonnot to cut it off? I mean, it is trashy to pump gas into a running vehicle.

Ive never turned my engine off to pump fuel

Getting gas in BR alone is dangerous with our demographics!!

I would if the crazies didn't freak out.
Same with talking on the phone at a gas station.

It's 100 degrees outside. I'm not sitting in my truck with no a/c
Eta: I always have a gun with me for the crazies

... back when other protections were not in place
For example, back in the 80's and early 90's cell phones were not electrically shielded and actually could interfere with aircraft operation. But that hasn't been true since, well, back then.
Same for gas pumps. In the 40's with unhoused spark plugs and the majority of the population with a lit cigarette at hand, this was a problem. Not anymore.
