Natural gas export project in Cameron Parish gets final federal approval
By Jennifer Larino, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune
The Energy Department has given a planned $10 billion project in Cameron Parish the final approval for broad exports of liquefied natural gas. The project was one of two projects the department approved Wednesday (Sept. 10).
In a statement, the Energy Department said Cameron LNG will be permitted to export up to 1.7 billion cubic feet per day of domestically produced natural gas overseas for up to two decades.
The broad approval includes exports to countries that do not have free-trade agreements with the U.S. such as Japan, which sees abundant U.S. natural gas as a way to lower rising electric power costs.
Cameron LNG, which completed its environmental review this spring, received final investment approval from investors in August, after the company lined up more than $7.4 billion in loans and other financing.
In March, the company awarded the $6 billion contract to build the export complex, which is located in Hackberry, La.
Cameron LNG expects to be fully operational by 2019.

Do the Louisiana politicians have to give their "approval" now?

Just the first of what may end up being a dozen such facilities built in Louisiana...

The Energy Department approves LNG exports to non-Free Trade Agreement countries, which include the more lucrative Asian markets, as long as those exports are “consistent with the public interest.” The Energy Department determined that the Cameron and Carib exports’ impact on the economy, energy security and the environment met that criteria.

Just nine more. Two additional facilities have already been approved.

I know that place very well. The earth movers arrived a couple weeks ago and have started shuffling dirt around. Someone with CAT is having a great sales month. We will not be too involved with the construction of the facility, but it will be cool to watch it unfold. You get a great view on top of the tanks.

I wonder if there is a market for 10 of these? When Shell proposed theirs it was pulled down within a week it seemed. Appeared to be some sort of PR move.

Japan is turning to American LNG in the wake of their nuclear disasters. Europe may soon follow suit. No one wants to be dependent on Russian energy sources.

Awesome news for LA. But LA doesn't have nearly the number of skilled labor it will take to build these plants. I heard CBI is planning on offering welder a $60+/hr + benefits when the work start bombing.
Another trade in short supply will be engineers for the design and construction as well.
Soon the flood gates will open as a number of these projects start, but beware like it did in the early eighties, when the work stops, you will have a mass number of welders and engineers all looking for work at once

That's the thing...the work ain't stopping anytime soon. Most welders and engineers currently working will retire well before this boom starts slowing down.
Cheap energy is also attracting a lot of new business in sectors previously not prominent in this state.

This is just licensing requirements. There won't be 12 of these in Louisiana. Maybe 3. 3 Would still be amazing for the job market.
quote:I think it was economic, not PR. There is only so much capital, and they had a few mega-projects around the globe to pick from. The GTL plant didn't pass economic muster for them. At least, that is my read on it... I do not work for Shell.

Three have already been approved. I would not be surprised to see additional announcements soon...the Russians are scaring everyone right now, and American LNG is seen a safe and secure source of energy.

Preliminary yes. Final approval, not so much.

I'd bet large we that see closer to twelve terminals than we do to three.
