Was reading through some United Way statistics. Although they appear to do some great things in the community, I found this stat interesting:

37,500 local families received free tax preparation, returning more than $48 million in refunds.

Shouldn't people that work and pay taxes figure out how to file them as well. If this free service to the 'needy' provided $48 million in refunds, then why are they doing it for free. Maybe I'm crossing the line, just thought this 'service' is a little much...or maybe I'm just thinking too much into it.

It's not taxpayer funded so I don't give a frick.

The thing you should be disgusted with is the fact that the tax code is so byzantine that it can require an expert to help file it.

And how much of that $48 million was actually a tax "return" and how much was government handouts disguised as tax credits?

Why does anyone give to United Way? Isn't the point of philanthropy to actually get to choose the causes you would like to support?
