Apartment broken into yesterday - What are some good home security options?

Yesterday I got home from work and found my front door kicked in and some things stolen from inside my apartment. Obviously this is being reactive instead of proactive, but does anybody have any good suggestions for home security? I've never even thought that I had to worry about something like this since I live in a pretty good area, but now I would like to have some sort of camera or something in my apartment.

Camera would have just been stolen and then you have another thing to replace.
1) Move to a better area
2) Install an alarm
3) Get a better door

Big dog, stickers, signage.
What apartment complex? First floor? Neighbors?

you can get surveillance cameras pretty cheap.
A gun is never a bad idea either.

Wasn't home, so it wouldn't have mattered. Probably would have been stolen if I had one.
Also, I can't have big dogs in my apartment (and I don't want a dog anyways right now considering it would be locked inside for 10 hours a day).

Well, security systems and cameras are crap. They wear masks and they go through your shite too quickly for law enforcement to react quickly enough.

First step for you and everyone else is doorjambarmor.com
If you have any of the following things but don't have reinforced door jambs/frames you are addressing less important factors before taking care of the elephant in the room.
After door jamb armor, in no particular order you could look at alarm systems, window security laminate/burglar bars, cameras, guard dogs.
Edited to add:
Seriously. The first thing everyone needs is door jamb armor. Anyone that thinks you can effectively secure a residential home without it or an equivalent is wrong. Alarms or dogs or anything else is ineffective and useless if you haven't done a damn thing to stop a person from kicking in the door.

They have done interviews over the years with burglars in jail and they always say a dog is the biggest deterrent. They have devices you can buy that play a recording of a dog barking when someone touches your door. Outside of that, reinforce your door frame and install a kick plate. You can't make it impossible to break in, you just want to make it harder than your neighbors.

Thanks for the suggestions
I definitely will be reinforcing the door frame. I like the idea of the device that plays a recording of a dog barking when my door is touched too. I'll probably do those things as well as some sort of hidden security camera.

Back when I was selling dope, I bought a couple fake snakes like this one:
LINK
Put one or two smaller ones in a glass snake container, and then a 5-footer partially hidden under a living room couch, with maybe half the body showing … and then a 6-footer in the room where you keep your valuable stuff.

Sorry about your drugs. Next time don't let your customers know where you live.
