Look for some older, wildcard candidates also to try to get in the running (Houston Nutt, Larry Coker, Butch Davis -- maybe even Rick Neuheisel, whose son is a receiver at SMU). The hunch here is that since SMU just had an older coach in Jones, the school will push for someone younger and with more energy.
A more viable option could be Louisiana-Lafayette's 45-year-old Mark Hudspeth, who is 28-13 at the school and 94-34 as a head coach.

SMU's time to get their shite together was several years ago. Too many players back in Texas now.

Coker aint going anywhere. Loves it in San Antonio. Ricky N would be awesome.

Hud ain't leaving this juice head paradise. He literally doesn't have to form coherent sentences anymore. He only has to yell and pound his chest and the Cajun faithful get fully erect. Lafayette is a paradise for him. He's a good coach overall and great coach for a program like ULL.
He has a cult following and enough oil field money to keep him living larger than he could ever imagine.

Is SMU an actual step up from ULL?

I don't see how SMU doesn't do better among the athletes that can get in. A degree from SMU is worth much more than a degree from ULL.
