I've got to go with Lincoln/Breckenridge in 1860. I don't think you can overstate how huge the implications of a Republican winning the White House over a Southern Democrat were.

Others:

Kennedy/Nixon
Johnson/Goldwater

1964 was a turning point election for the nation.

Definitely, but was it bigger than the 1860 election? I can't imagine any election bigger than that one.

Of course 1860 was a pivotal election since it possibly lead to war. I went with 1964 because the reverberations are still felt today.

1980 Reagan/Carter

Not often mentioned because it was a landslide, but... If Carter had won... *shudder*

And a big part of the reason 1964 was so pivotal was the end of the Civil War 99 years earlier. It's impossible to even guess what the '64 election would have looked like or been about had there not been a Civil War.

It was the single most defining event in American history, save for the Revolutionary War and the institution of the Constitution.

Lincoln winning without question. After Kennedy you had Reagan, but every other President could of been replaced with the loser and it wouldn't have mattered much.

1860, no question. Immediately led to secession.
