A coworker of mine was in the breakroom a few weeks ago and someone was commenting from a newspaper article about a shooting in Baton Rouge. He said," I bet it was in the hood." Someone called the corporate office about the remark and he was suspended for three days without pay.
First, if he had said," inner city" instead of "hood", would that have mattered?
Second, do you think this was justifiable grounds for a suspension?
Third, could a minority person make a similar comment that would result in a like suspension?

FYI- The shooting did turn out to be in the inner city.

He did make an assumption. But if you look at crime stats, it's a safe one.

The punishment was excessive IMO but the business owner can run it as he pleases.

What company do you work for?

If possible, I'll be sure to take my business elsewhere.

No

Second, do you think this was justifiable grounds for a suspension?

No, but also unsurprising.

Third, could a minority person make a similar comment that would result in a like suspension?

I'll assume this is rhetorical

How can you not see that the boss is reacting on the false belief that extreme political correctness is "proper".

This phenomenon may be extra-legal, but it has the power to limit free speech all the same.

Yes, it's a blurry line. It's hard to see exactly where the line of propreity stops. Victor Hanson had a great series of writings on this very topic. I'll see if I can find them.

Really dumb move by your company. What company is it?

Call Fox News (or tweet one of them, they actually respond) and let them know.

Your company will be out if business in a few months...

....and you'll be out of a job

I wasn't there when the comments were made so I don't know if that's all that was said. I heard about it 2 weeks later when I was making a political comment in the same break room and someone warned me about watching what I said.

If you needed to lodge a complaint does EBT people give you a list to call?

How about medicaid?

When you get into your section 8 housing are you given a list of numbers to call to complain about the slumlords?

Let's say your Obama phone isn't working properly do you go to the actual phone service to seek help or do you call the IRS?

When the voting van comes by and the driver short changes you 10.00 for your vote, is there a Dem hotline you are given to seek reparations?

You've finally admitted you don't know anything and you don't have a meaningful job. Good to know.

No freedom of speech at the workplace so why risk creating a paper trail of excusing possible racially charged incidents. Better for company to show a zero tolerance policy in case of a lawsuit in the future.
