Damn, what a great fricking movie.
It really got screwed at awards time.

Is this out on cable yet? I really want to see it.

Just watched it on Starz. Good movie, but GOD I thought PL Travers was a bitch...and apparently all her grand kids thinks so, too.

Just watched it on Starz as well.
Thompson nailed the performance.

Saw it in the theatre. a very diverse crowd and pretty much the whole group seemed to enjoy it. It was simply a very well crafted movie, but I think there were politics involved as far as awards for it were concerned. I think Disney is the evil empire everyone loves to hate on in Hollywood, even though a huge number probably depend on it for their livelihood. It was also not edgy enough for critics.

Enjoyed the movie and afterwards decided to watch Marry Poppins for the first time since I was a kid.
Hated it.
Had to turn it off about halfway through.

You HATED Poppins? What? Are you a communist?

Sure, pretty much unavoidable. If you look at the Rotten Tomato review summaries there are plenty of reviewers that panned it just for being Disney. On the other hand Disney making a movie about themselves is pretty self serving and it's unlikely that it was 100% honest.
But I still liked it quite a bit.

I thought it was a good movie. Colin Farrell, Tom Hanks, and Emma Thompson were all great in it.

They need to make a true biography of Disney's life. I'm currently reading his 700 page bio and the man accomplished so much.

I was disappointed by Hanks in this. He wasn't playing Disney (even the whitewashed-version), he was playing his character from That Thing You Do.
Will never happen. Disney wouldn't let it unless it was a giant puff piece.

Reading his book, he seemed to be a huge tyrant with his staff. Not at all what I imagined from the older man we had come to know thanks to the Wonderful World of Disney. At the same time, he had enormous pressure from the banks and even working around the clock still just barely made the deadline for theater release.
If they set it around the time of the studios success just as he prepared to buy land in Anaheim and continue through his death, it will show the softer grandfatherly side. It could still work.

Dude, seek help.
I enjoyed Mr Banks. Only problem is, it's been Disneyfied. Travers hated the final script, and the movie, and refused to ever allow her work to be used by Disney again. How can anyone hate that film? My daughter is in a Mary Poppins phase right now, and I love it.

I did the same as the guy above. Loved mr banks, hated Mary poppins. It was soo long and drawn out. It's a classic but if it came out today, it would bomb.

Poppins was about 30 minutes too long.

It was a pretty damn good movie. I had a little bit of a touch time suspending disbelief with Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, but he did a great job.

From everything I have read, the script was too kind to her. She was far worse than portrayed.

To be fair, I didn't really HATE it. However, my wife and I weren't really feeling it. The movie is quite long, and we just were tired of watching it.

139 minutes of run time for Mary Poppins (1964). Two hours and nineteen minutes! Uncle!
It was at least thirty minutes too long, there were several songs which should have missed the cut, led by my personal not favorite "Fidelity Fiduciary Bank". The whole suffragette angle as a plot device is a boondoggle the movie could have done without. By 1964, society couldn't have cared less.
The only upside was for parents of kids who watched this movie, a long, long nap could be effected during the run.

I have read the same. If you stay (or watch) through the credits, they play actual audio of her and she comes across as a real bitch.
Oh, and Giamatti did great. He really is underrated.
