Came down from Texas to see my parents in Ponchatoula. Brought my wife and 1 year old. I'll be off the rest of the week on vacation but don't know the area very well. Got any suggestions of things to do in this area? So far, ponchatoula doesn't seem too happenin.
For you local guys, could you help us out on some things to do today? So far it's just antique stores and cemeteries down here. We would really like to do something different / fun. Restaurant and getaway spots are welcome. Let me know and thank you!

I'm grew up in Ponchatoula. There are lots of things to do.
1. Go eat at Kirin in Hammond (Cajun Roll)
2. Go eat at Tommy's in Hammond
That's all I got

There's nothing to do anywhere in Tangipahoa parish. Just drive to NOLA

Ponchatoula Recreation park: Walking trails, playgrounds, large pond with ducks and geese to feed...
Definitely eat at Tommy's pizza in Hammond
Drive down to Lee's Landing and see Shelby's pirate ship

We are great with that and pretty unfamiliar with NOLA as well. Any thoughts on things to do down there?

There's plenty of antique shops in Ponthatoula, but not a week's worth, like an afternoon tops. However, you'll be close to lots of fun stuff. You can go to Abita Springs and tour the Abita Brewery, rent bicycles to bike the Tammany Trace (stopping by the Covington Brewery along the way), dip your toes in Lake Ponchetrain at Fountainbleu State Park, visit the weird museum that they have in Covington.
A trip down the causeway to New Orleans is a must as well. Leave the toddler with the grandparents and take the wifey down for a romantic date day with great food, a streetcar ride, drinks at Bachanal, a stroll down Frenchmen, and visits to City and Audubon Park. Finish the night with a late night concrete at Camelia Grill before heading back across the causeway.

Is the big alligator still there?

You could take your kid to global wildlife center. It's probably a 30 minute drive from Ponchatoula.

This thread makes me cry

No, the big fella is no longer there. Kliebert's gator farm swaps em out every so often now...usually just around a 4-5 footer

I think there are airboat/swamp tours in the area.
Kayak a couple hours on the Bogue Chitto.
Bring the kid to the Tickfaw State Park.

Tough time of year for entertainment. Especially during the week. I live here and besides the park there isnt much for kids to do during the week

If you only knew someone with a sailboat! Sailing on Lake Pontchartrain is great this time of year.
