Could the Republican party's problem be that Americans are getting poorer?

There has been a fairly steady decrease in the wealth of American's for some years now. Because of this, people are more economically vulnerable and attracted to financial protection in the form of more government services.

In the 80s and 90s, you would not find near the amount of support you would today for initiatives such as single payer, universal daycare, and tax-funded tuition.

But holy crap has the dialogue changed since the last few years. It seems like so many economic problems in this country involve unaffordability, and thus calls for government involvement.

People are poorer, and it shows in the country's current views towards government services.

Just yesterday I read a story about the "glasses crisis" in this country and how millions of Americans are going without prescription glasses because they cannot afford them. This "affordability" crisis is literally extended to every good (even tampons). You would never see stories like this in earlier times.

yes and on top of it the perception is that republicans don't care about doing anything about it, that they just want to help the top 2% continue to get richer at the expense of everyone else.

I think it goes a lot deeper than that. I can understand the healthcare and college debate, but glasses??? tampons?? DIAPERS??? Those make no sense.

The deeper issue is that there is a growing hatred of the price system.

What's funny though is that under the Obama administration the rich have never been better off and the middle class has never been this squeezed since the Great Depression.

Obama has done more than any republican ever has for Wall Street and crony capitalism.

Republicans are pro business and that includes small business, but the media paints pro business as pro corporation instead of pro Main Street

Typically, I would use it in regards to politicians and bureaucrats. I don't think they mean to do anything malevolent, they're just unaware of the consequences.

In this light, I don't think people 'hate' the price system - they just don't understand it. HS econ (which is the understanding of a large majority of the populace, if they even remember that much) is terrible and doesn't teach anything terribly useful.

It is amazing how the homeless problem has gone away since Obama has been President. You never hear about them or the price of gas on the evening news anymore.

The dems have done a damn good job at selling the idea that all corporate profits go to a bunch of old white men who sit around counting their money in conference rooms.

And then we have that little problem with two generations now who don't know shite about money management and think they are entitled to spend whatever they want to find happiness.

The stock bubble and housing bubble in the 90's set false expectations and drove up prices above wage levels. We bailed companies out, people are looking for a personal bailout.

Profit, too, is now a hated word. Like I said, the amount of animosity against free markets is at an all time high.

Young people, when polled, support more taxation and more government services, too.

My experience with poor folks is they will pay car note and house note, buy "luxury" items before taking care of the basics. I think the idea that people are owed a base existence has taken hold.

It was inevitable under Obama. That is the elitist Democrap plan -- to put as many people on the government dole so that they have no choice but to vote for Democrats.

Mainstream Republicans totally support a welfare system too.

Republicans need to come up with a proper way to get people off welfare and dependency. The current method is a welfare trap.

things are less expensive than they've ever been. People waste more money on vacations, toys, etc than ever before.

You're welcome. xoxo, Democrats

Perhaps poor people should consider that and maybe vote more R...because the D's keep them exactly as they want them ... as pissed-off slaves who continue to vote D.

Welcome to meme naivety, Michigan.

Here's a graph of average family income over the years (in inflation-adjusted US Dollars). As you can see, there has been far from "a fairly steady decrease in income of Americans."

Now while wealth and income over time do not necessarily equate, I'm certain you can see the basic problem with the narrative you've been sold. As far as "wealth," as goes US housing, so goes US median wealth.
