How many games did it take during Cecil's freshman year to have that "break out" game ?

Cecil didn't have a freshman year, and I think he was suspended the first game of his sophomore year. I believe the big game he had at State was the first game he saw action.

Deisel was on an entirely different level than any other person to suit up in the purple and gold. He was Hershel/Bo level in the total package. LF may become that guy, but until he does, save it with the compares.

once the line blocks for the runningbacks, you'll see a ton of production like we saw in the second half.

LSU had 17 yards rushing in the 1st half vs UW

Fournette's story hasn't been told yet...but it was always a long shot that he was going to end up as good as Cecil.

it's not entirely the o-line's fault. Miles placed them in a no-win situation with trying to force the run with 9 people, hell sometimes 10, stacked in the box. It's hard to block when you're out numbered

Could be wrong here but I believe Cecil's first start was against Auburn as a sophomore. Ran 27 times for 232 yards, he was unstoppable until breaking his ankle in his 3rd game

I think the speed of the game really affected LF7 a lot more than anyone thought it would. Even on the kickoff returns he wasn't very shifty.

His first game was against Miss State. He ran for about 145 yards that game. Game 2 was either Auburn or Akron, I don't remember the order. Add another 360 yards or so combined for those two games. His 4th game was at Vandy and he broke his ankle in the first half.

Cecil played 3+ games for LSU. Hopefully LF will play 40+. I wouldn't trade.

Was it Cecils 2nd or 3rd game when an analyst said "he is the best RB in America with the possible exception of Barry Sanders"

Gotcha, that was a long time ago

That Auburn game just stuck out I guess because it was his most impressive of that incredible 3 game stretch, oh what could have been...

Sanders last college game was in 1989, I believe. The Diesel was playing in the mid 90's if memory serves. But that three game stretch was amazing. The guy was literally untackleable, if that is a word.

Yeah, at State was the first game and he was awesome in that one. I remember him taking it 60+ for a TD with one shoe on (or he stepped out near the end zone). State was pretty good back then too.

Next was Auburn and that was the most memorable performance I've ever seen from an LSU RB...one of the loudest games I ever remember too...and we still lost. Auburn was really good though and played in the SEC Championship that year (making the performance more impressive). When I watched the re-broadcast, Mike Gottfried was saying that he had seen a lot of good backs, but Cecil Collins was special. He kept saying he was special over and over. The dude was an awesome kick returner too. Pure power and speed. His acceleration was incredible.

Of all the players that I've ever seen at LSU, he was the one that I felt was unstoppable. But it only lasted three full games...

That was the announcers hyperbolic point.....that besides the best back in the NFL, Collins was the best running back.

No doubt, Collins' performance in a losing effort was as memorable a show as anyone's ever seen. That Ron Franklin / Mike Gottfried combo, as far as I'm concerned, is "the sound" I'll always associate with the resurgence of LSU football.

But to put things in perspective, especially in terms of how good that O line was that year in general, and that night specifically, we had 3 running backs go over 100 yards in the Auburn game. Taking nothing away from Collins performance (it seemed as if Auburn players were afraid to try and tackle him there towards tr second half), Mealey actually ran for a higher yards per carry IIRC. Faulk didn't actually stink the place up his own self.

Just saying.
