I'm quite flabbergasted at this statement.

LINK

quote:

"Before getting into the strategy though, there seems [to be] a fundamental, existential question: Is the United States presently at war with ISIS, yes or no?" MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked President Barack Obama's top spokesman, White House press secretary Josh Earnest, on Thursday.

Earnest went with "no."

"No, Chris. What we are doing is we are working very aggressively with international partners, with Iraqi and Kurdish security forces, to take the steps necessary to mitigate the threat that's posed by ISIL," he responded.

The interview was part of a series of television appearances for Earnest on Thursday and Friday after Obama stumbled and said "we don't have a strategy yet" for dealing with the Islamic State in Syria. Earnest insisted Obama actually has a "comprehensive strategy" even as critics slam the administration for not articulating a more forceful foreign policy vision for the region.

On MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program Friday, Earnest was again pressed with the "war" question.

"Does the president agree with [columnist] Eugene Robinson that we are, in fact, at war with ISIS even though it's not a declared war?" host Joe Scarborough inquired.

Earnest, again, maintained the U.S. was simply trying to "mitigate the threat."

"I think what the president would say is it's very important that we take the necessary steps to mitigate the threat that ISIL poses to the United States of America," he said.

Mitigate the threat huh? We need to mitigate ISIS completely and be done with it.

An expensive version of mitigating a threat without the use of Iraqi and Kurdish security forces.

Maybe I don't know how this works, but have we declared war on ISIS?

If not, then he is making a true statement.

Korea wasn't a war. Why call this a war?

I would think Obama haters would like this, as Obama can take more liberties in times of 'war'.

See the follow up. No one is asking if this is a declared war, but you start dropping bombs, you are at war. Silly semantics played by a bunch of lawyers and it's just going to confuse the public and your allies in the region.

By wiping them off of the face of the earth.

Look, these people make AQ look civilized. They will not stop. You cannot reason with them. They are beheading people and parading them around for the world to see. They are committing crimes against humanity.

If the US is not at war with ISIS, then I have no idea who we are or what we stand for. They will not stop until they take over Iraq, threaten oil production, and export savagery to our very shores.

I was not in favor of going into Iraq. We had Saddam contained. He was a brutal dictator, but he was not like this. We could deal with him. These people need to be dealt with by the United States Armed Forces.

He just doesn't want to be on record saying that his administration is starting a war. Obama's naive vision of our foreign policy is collapsing all around him and he is clearly in denial.

I'm all for laying waste to everyone in ISIS, but I don't think people on here understand the political ramifications of doing this on our own when this group is mostly hiding in Syria

Good point, declaring war as W did doesn't do a thing.

But W acted, Obama reacts.

You can argue about W's policies, his invasion of Afghanistan and the Iraq; however, you can't say he stood there after 9/11 and let AQ stay strong. You can't say he let Saddam thumb his nose at the UN and stop the inspectors and shoot at our planes.

To be fair, you have to see what Obama does, but so far as Isis is concerned; they caught him by surprise, he has no plan to deal with them, and he seems to be totally inept when it comes to devising a strategy to corral these barbarians.
