According to this morning's DandyDon update, Miles is quoted as saying that Clifton Garrett has struggled with acclimating to the heat and is not ready to take the field. Everything I've heard up to this point is that Garrett has been performing well and would be an immediate contributor. Has anyone heard anything else about this?

isn't the houston game in a dome?

and all the LSU home games will be at night

sounds like he's a welter apologist!

He was running with the 3rd team at MLB in scrimmages. No reason to think he would figure in greatly this year unless there's an injury.

There were reports of that earlier this summer. He wasn't going to jump 2 people and play this year anyway.

yep. welter was the best linebacker in the SEC last year. he's entrenched as the starter it seems.

Wasn't he a 5 star LB coming out of HS?

HS != College

Some people and some positions have a harder time making the transition

he came in a little out of shape...you don't just snap your fingers and become in shape. Despite his lack of conditioning, he has looked really good so far

Basically this. MLB is basically like a QB except on Defense. He has to know everyone's job and be able to tell them where to be at all times. Beckwith has been here for awhile and can't do it yet so CG is gonna need time. He'll be fine. Lots of freshman struggle early on.

I have never had any expectation that a freshman would come in and start at MLB or Center. There's too much of a jump from HS to college both mentally and physically.

Garrett will be a great one. Just not right now.

I saw Clifton play in high school in Illinois this past fall. I believe that he will be a very good player. However, I was not as blown away as I thought I might be before I arrived at the game. He ran well, was physical, and made plays but if I didn't know the reputation going into the game I wouldn't have thought that he was an LSU-caliber recruit. It didn't have anything to do with effort as I thought he played hard. I wrote as much last fall and got hammered for it, although I understand that probably wasn't wise as he wasn't signed yet.

Someone on LSU's staff was in my wedding. I texted him this immediately following the game, "I saw Chief was coming. To be honest, I expected more. He looks the part, runs well, but he doesn't disengage well because he lets guys get in to his body but that can be fixed. What surprised me a bit was I expect a guy like that to really pop out at me during warmups and while I obviously figured out pretty quickly which kid he was it wasn't immediate. If I had been at the game looking for an LSU caliber kid I would have never recommended him. However, I have seen him on film make some WOW plays athletically where he played downhill really fast. Have seen more on film than I did tonight."

Again, he may end up being a great player. He definitely has ability. I was just slightly underwhelmed when I saw him in person. With that said, I saw his highlight tape and was very impressed.

he's a freshman who wasn't in great SEC shape coming in. from a northern climate…a year or redshirt or special teams play would benefit him. not many true freshman start at MLB

Yup. But he's a true freshman and he plays a position where true freshmen typically don't contribute.

The last two really good mikes we had (Minter and Shep) both redshirted.

ETA: ditto what the five guys before me said.

i think you read to much into it...he is a freshman its not surprising he isnt ready to take the field and he had a reaction...this doesnt surprise me either considering how hot its been...he might be immediate contributor on special teams but considering who is infront of him on the depth chart i wouldnt imagine hime getting much pt at LB

I see CG alot like Perry Riley... gonna take a year or two of development, but will be a standout LB by RSSo and Jr year.
