A buddy just got one and I was surprised by how well it moves and the interior for the price. Has VW solved their reliability issues?

I liked the look of previous iteration a lot more:

That said, it was a fun ride when I test drove it. Problem was that version only had 4 seats and I needed 5.

Isn't this the same company that owns Audi, Lamborghini, and Bugatti and Porsche?

I did a lot of research on passat TDIs before I bought one. Research indicated that the newer models of VW were more reliable. However, at the time (dec 2011), there was not a lot of data for the cars coming out of the new American plant.

My wife had a 2000 Passat with a four cylinderr turbo. Pros: Rode well. Great pick up and quiet. Cons: check engine light on constantly. O2 sensors, coils, ignition, a/c. Always something. Glad to get rid of that POS! However, I miss the VW ride quality as her Fusion is not as good a ride but at least the check engine light isnt on.
We recently rented a 2014 Wolfsburg Edition Passat in Seattle. Sharp looking and great ride quality. But, I'm still gun shy and leary of the long term reliability. I would think hard about VW and if you do get an extended warranty.

No they have not solved the reliability problems. But on the plus side it's not a Honda or Toyota. A lot more fun.

VW still rates pretty low in recent reliability surveys.
