I have been studying WWI recently and have gained a new respect for the French military. Frankly their commanders sucked in both WWI and WWII but the troops are tough as nails.

Some people call that a "fundamental transformation."

If I understand this right...they aren't rallying against the socialist president because he's socialist, but because he isn't socialist enough?

Foch & Petain were solid commanders, if course it helps to have more than 2.
In WWII they were simply doomed to a flawed strategy and outclassed by innovative new tactics and daring commanders on the enemy side, along with the geographic misfortune of being next to Germany. If the entire British (Isles) population and military was swapped into geographic France, they likely would have suffered the same fate. The BEF was also routed in France by the Germans in WWII. But the heroic French defense of Dunkirk illustrated the valor of French soldiers. They fight well, contrary to their reputation. Of the major powers, the most pathetic military display had to have come from the Italians, particularly given all the bravado.

France never should have copied us and revolted. They turned into pansies after they killed the king. I mean, who fights an entire revolution in song?

Ah yes Sissy. But it was Buffy who was way before her time:

Shortly before noon on August 28, 1976, after partying all night in the beach town of Oceanside, California, with her new boyfriend Allan "Butch" Koven and others, Jones was found dead in the bedroom of a house belonging to the father of a 14-year-old friend named Helen Hennessey.[3]:28 The coroner's report listed her death as an accidental drug overdose:[4] cocaine, PCP, Quaaludes and Seconal were found in her body during an autopsy toxicology examination. The coroner who examined Jones reported she died from one of the most severe drug overdoses he had ever seen. Anissa Jones was only 18 years old.[3]:28
Jones had no funeral and was cremated. Her ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean.[4] She left $63,000 in cash and more than $100,000 in savings bonds when she died.
Six days after Jones' death, Dr. Don Carlos Moshos, who had prescribed the Seconal identified in Jones' toxicology report, was arrested and charged with illegally prescribing the drug to Jones, among other drugs-for-profit charges from a concurrent criminal investigation. While awaiting trial, Moshos died of a terminal illness. His estate was sued by Jones' surviving family for $400,000; in July 1979, the verdict found Dr. Moshos 30% liable and Jones 70% responsible for her death and the resulting judgment was reduced to $79,500.
In 1984, her brother Paul also died of a drug overdose. He was 24 years old. [3]:29 In 2010, her mother Mary Paula Jones died. There were no surviving heirs to the family name.
RIP Buffy

Some folks either haven't read history or don't understand the difference between surrendering and getting your arse kicked. France lost more troops (1.4 miilion) in WWI than the U.S. has lost in its entire history, and it lost more troops in WWII during the six weeks after Germany invaded trying defend Paris than the U.S. lost in Korea and Vietnam combined. The British behaved more cowardly than the French during this period IMO.
Also, Petain was never elected to anything, he was a German collorator/puppet who was rightfully tried and convicted for treason after the war, not to mention the 10,000 summary executions that were carried out in France to rid the country of the rest of its collaborators both during and after the war.
