This amazing study speaks to abuses of power and how all humans are capable of those abuses when given unchecked power. And in my opinion, is also relevant to the militarization of the police force and how the availability of upgraded weapons elevates ones attitude to abuse these weapons in equal degrees.

quote:

The Stanford prison experiment (SPE) was a study of the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The experiment was conducted at Stanford University from August 14–20, 1971, by a team of researchers led by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo.[1] It was funded by the US Office of Naval Research[2] and was of interest to both the US Navy and Marine Corps as an investigation into the causes of conflict between military guards and prisoners. Twenty-four male students out of seventy-five were selected to take on randomly assigned roles of prisoners and guards in a mock prison situated in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. The participants adapted to their roles well beyond Zimbardo's expectations, as the guards enforced authoritarian measures and ultimately subjected some of the prisoners to psychological torture. Many of the prisoners passively accepted psychological abuse and, at the request of the guards, readily harassed other prisoners who attempted to prevent it. The experiment even affected Zimbardo himself, who, in his role as the superintendent, permitted the abuse to continue. Two of the prisoners quit the experiment early and the entire experiment was abruptly stopped after only six days. Certain portions of the experiment were filmed and excerpts of footage are publicly available.

It's a shame they put the "n" right next to the "b" on the keyboard.

ETA: We watched a film on this in one of the psych courses I took in college. Really powerful insight into human behavior.

They made a movie about this called "The Expirement". Really good movie. I recommend watching it.

No. A professor at Stanford basically designed an experiment in which a group of student volunteers would serve as either jailers or prisoners. The students all basically took to their roles a little too well, and the jailers started psychologically abusing the prisoners, who in turn accepted it. Even the professor who designed the experiment (serving as the prison's warden) apparently got a little too into it, as he let the abuse go on for some days before stopping the experiment. It was pretty highly criticized and led to some new protocols regarding these types of experiments.

I'm just glad that people aren't powerful enough or abusive enough to send others halfway around the globe in harm's way just to line their own pockets.

All of this info was included in the quote I provided in the OP. Why don't people read?

Must really suck to have every written word remind you of the petrodollar and the global elite ..... What did that have to do with this thread, anyway ??

What the hell? I guess it's too much to ask that you try to address the thread topic.

Meh, there was a lot of issues with the experiment. Zimbardo actually told them to exert power as much as possible. They were also fed information by an ex-con on how to be even bigger assholes.

Could be, but the urge to exert power over another or to abuse said powers has to be inherent in a person, otherwise, no amount of coercion would cause that to come out.

You weren't the one who didn't read it. And you did a great job of summarizing the OP.
