DJ Welter vs. Younger LB's: What is he bringing to the table again?

I've been going back watching games from last year and specifically grading Welter on a play-by-play basis.
So far, I've done this for three randomly selected games: Iowa, Arkansas, and Ole Miss. While I realize a few games aren't going to be totally representative of his performance, these games all occurred in the last half of the season. Coincidentally, that is the period where he showed the most improvement, if you are to believe the coach and media narrative. (In fact, LSUsports.net explicitly says the Outback Bowl was his "best all-around game") †
As you might guess, my overall assessment of Welter is not that great. To put it politely, I find him to be very inactive during all facets of the game: before the snap, during scrimmage, and after the snap.
Before the snap
While I've heard people say Chief values Welter for his intelligence and leadership, I don't really ever see him quarterbacking the defense.
Other than an occasional hand gesture here and there, he doesn't seem to be making much of an attempt to make reads or corrections. While not everyone can be Ray Lewis, I find him to be extraordinarily timid, non-verbal, and worst of all, stationary for a middle linebacker.
Let me be clear though, I don't think this problem has anything to do with his toughness or lack of an alpha dog personality. I just think he is too concerned and distracted with figuring out where he needs to go to worry about what his teammates need to do.
Sadly, I think this is more of a football intelligence, if not general intelligence, issue. And the fact that he was put on academic probation a couple of years ago doesn't do much to help his case for being much of a thinker, either.
Tomorrow, I will post my breakdown of Welter "During Scrimmage". Stay tuned.

Yeah this is great and all but until someone steps up and takes the job from him then you're really just wasting your time.

Hey look its amateur hour for the junior sports writer's league on the rant!

To answer the question, its experience and presumably knowing the defense. But to your point, he won't play in the NFL, while his backup barring injury will. If beckwith proves his knowledge and command of the defense are on par then I imagine he will become the starter, hopefully this year.
Saying all of this, it's nothing personal. If DJ is playing, I hope he plays well.

I do support him. We will need him to contend for a championship, whether it be this year or next year. I just hope for the team's sake it's more in a reserve role though. I am hearing outstanding things about Kendell Beckwith, and I don't think Welter's extra year of experience should preclude his opportunity to start.

You question Welter's intelligence, but not Beckwith?

Not familiar with any information that would make me question Beckwith's intelligence, but feel free to fill me in.

the way clm spoke of him on his show the other night , it seems to me he will lose his job this season ....
sure clm didn't exactly say that but he called him "a program guy" and also said there will be others gunning for his position ... idk but just reading between the lines I think he loses his job early in the season ....

The only people that we know of (the coaches), who spend each and every day with both of them, think Welter is more intelligent. The coaches are paid to be experts in making such evaluations and their livelihoods depends upon it. I'll bet you would agree that the Chief is a top 5 D Coordinator and linebacking is his specialty. If as you say, that Welter is a dumbass, what does that say about the guy who is behind him in the rotation who is clearly more physically gifted?
