We never fished in the storm sewers, but after watching this video, we probably should have. The young man in it baits a set line with a piece of sausage -- strawberry-flavored, of all things -- and successfully catches a cat

Eat it? Hell no.

Run a few lines to see what happens? Why not?

That has never ever occurred to me to even try. He catches a bass on one video.

I have said this here before: NOLA storm sewer system is a large % raw sewage if it hasn't rained.

Back in 2008 I worked on a monitoring project of sorts and spent some time in a john boat in them. I never saw any big fish but there were a lot of 6" cichlids and a few 5-6 ft alligators and several smaller ones.

The pump operators fed the gators their leftover lunches.

OK well maybe NO main sewer and storm sewer are connected but in many subdivisions and along road sides, the storm sewers are just underground concrete creeks that lead to open creeks or containment ponds and then on to local reservoirs. All of the input is surface runoff mostly from streets, residential yards, and parking lots. I have walked miles of these in TX and fished many and caught a ton of nice bass and sunfish. A great way to get some northern trout stream flyfishing experience in hot dry summer TX.

No they are separate systems but between cracks, illegal hook ups, and retarded workers a substantial portion of the "rain water" is raw household sewage. It is supposed to be all rain water runoff.

I agree that this happens, but where I fished it was not common (other than retarded workers).

Of course NO being a large metropolitan fishbowl, under sea level, and partially filled with low socioeconomic types, likely does not help.
