I hear people trying to make the argument that "you wouldn't walk up to a Native American and call them a redskin"... Of course you wouldn't. But If you walk up to a Native American and call him Chief is that not offensive also?

What up, Brave? How's it going, Blackhawk? Yo, Simonole, hi five! Hey, Indian, how's the sun god treating you?

What if they can keep the name by changing the mascot to a Jersey Shore kid with a bad sunburn?

I have never once hear anyone use the term Redskin when not referring to the football team.

On one side we have people who claim that the word is offensive and should be changed.

On the other side we have people who claim that the word isn't really that big a deal and that there is no need to change it.

Somehow the second group is way angrier than the first group.

And that's why "Redskins" is getting so much heat.

Without getting too political, this is the "age of the victim" and there is a willing/complicit Administration and media that will carry the water for any aggrieved group, no matter how small and insignificant, if that group affords the opportunity to continue to sow discontent.

This is what happens when you elect a "community organizer" as president.

I was listening to an interview with the Redskins beat reporter last night on ESPN radio and he said he talked to the heads of 15 different tribes and not one of them was offended by the Redskins name and most of them were worried about more trivial things like healthcare for natives. Who is the moral minority pushing this shite?

This isn't just some random crowd riling that's going on, a group has followed the procedures laid out by the US Patent and Trademark office to dispute a trademark, and after a decade of working the system, they got a ruling in their favor and now the Redskins will appeal. This isn't the first time it's happened either.

quote:

The Redskins trademark, which has been registered since 1967, was also canceled in 1999, but that decision was overturned in 2003. The team is allowed to enforce its trademark registration while the appeal is being heard.

LINK

The difference between now and 1999 is social media. In 1999 probably the only people that heard about this were Redskins fans that read the local paper daily. Now everybody hears about it and feels the need to weigh in on it, because it's a no brainer to be publicly against racial slurs, and make no mistake, even if decades of being an NFL brand has muddied the meaning of the slur, this is a poorly chosen name by today's standards.
