My wife (no pics) is pregnant (yes, congrats on the sex). As I look at the laundry list of crap to buy, I can't help but to ponder the use of hidden nanny cams. We plan to get a couple of cameras, but I am making sure that they are out in the open and that the nanny knows they are there.

My question is this, why would a person hide the camera? Wouldn't you want the person watching your child know that you have cameras in place so they wouldn't do anything stupid to your child?

Well, I think you hide the camera if something is suspected. If you need evidence that abuse has been occurring, you would not put the camera in plain sight.

If you are using it as a deterrent, like say a security camera at a store, then yes put it in the open.

If you already have a nanny and suspect shite happening you hide to see. If you have the cam first then out in the open is best

Because they can just do anything questionable outside of the view of the cameras now that they know about them.

Hidden nanny cameras always make me think of that scene out of Kickass.

I'll watch your baby, brah, but I'm not cheap.

Not at all being a typical OT smart arse with this answer. I would never hire someone to watch my kids that I had the least bit of doubt about. Period. I would work two jobs and let the wife stay home before I leave the little one with someone I hired off the street. Or, shudder at the thought, let the MIL move in and do it.

So you want to secretly watch her fap while you and the wife are away at dinner? Just ask her directly.

New Yorkers have very strange ideas about childrearing.

How so?

My wife and I both work so we plan to hire someone to take care of the newborn . This is our first child and will be the most important thing in our lives. We plan to vet the nanny and the agency, but you never know. Despite all of the background checks, we are still leaving our newborn in the hands of a stranger.

You hide the camera because you want to catch them. If they know where the camera is then it is easier to try to hide wrong doing.

Personally, I think that it would be a pretty big insult to the person, and I find the idea distasteful.

Hidden is reactive and out in the open is proactive.

However, the one exception to the hidden camera is that you don't want the camera you put in the bathroom to be noticeable.

My mom runs a nanny placement company. If you hire a nanny you feel the need to videotape, you made a mistake.

I'm not criticizing you as a parent. What I mean is, in my experience, this whole quoted paragraph is a completely normal thing to say in New York. But New York is (more or less) the only place where this would be a completely normal thing to say.

We have a nanny and we have no cameras.

If I didn't trust our nanny enough to not spy on her, she wouldn't be our nanny.

We have a nanny and two cameras in the area where my kid spends most of the day and one in the kids room. The nanny knows they are there.

They are primarily used by my wife so she can see and hear our kid during the day not necessarily for spying on the nanny.

Do a good job vetting your nanny and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
