I caught a few fish Sunday afternoon but won't be able to clean them until tomorrow morning. Ice chest has been drained every few hours and completely covered with ice.

Will the fish still be fresh by tomorrow morning?

Here is a picture before I covered them with ice:

Well that's like 5 minutes of fish cleaning, plus another 5 minutes of clean up right there. But...

Check the eyes. If the eyes are clear, they're probably still good.

Please don't keep fish you have no time or intention to clean.

Thank you,

As long as they don't stink, I say they're good.

If you would have left them in a yeti it would have been as good as a freezer.

I always release fish when I know I don't time to clean. A family situation came up. I never keep fish if I don't intend to cook them before freezing.

If iced properly and drained daily, they will last at least 7-10 days.

Obviously the quicker you can get to them the better but they should be find tomorrow morning. The fillets will look just like you caught them.

Don't listen to the people who say they won't last. We don't eat meat/seafood in the store that fresh usually.

Probably could have cleaned them in the time its taking to post. That said, I often keep fish from Friday to Sunday then clean at once. A few times from Thursday. No problem. I don't drain the water though...a slurry keeps them super cold.

Am I doing it wrong?

Deer meat should be drained. I can't see an upside to draining whole fish. They live in the stuff.

I agree, if only I was anywhere near them. I actually had to leave early from fishing to go to the hospital and haven't been home since.

When I do these long range charters out of San Diego they put the fish in refrigerated sea water holds. It keeps the fish at 32 degrees and the fish you catch on day one are just as good as the fish you catch on day seven. You're good to go.

I agree don't know why you would have to drain the water. Should still be good.
