Correcting Bad Dog Behavior (Fighting)

Any advice on how to stop my dog from getting into dog fights?
He's a 2 yrs old mutt, neutered, and has never had any problems getting along with other dogs up until about a month ago. Out of no where, he just suddenly started getting into fights at the dog park and with my friends dogs. No problems with people, but its getting to the point where i don't feel comfortable bringing him to the park. I don't think it stems from being over possessive of toys/food.
He's a sweet dog, very intelligent and extremely obedient, but i need to get this under control before it gets any worse.

He needs an alpha dog to correct him. That should be you.
Put it to you this way: if your dog met an actual alpha dog, he wouldn't fight. Why? Because he knows the other dog is dominant.
So, just dominate your dog.

any possible health problems? Is he neutered? If this is some sudden onset, it may be he is dealing with a health issue you don't notice. Might be worth a trip to your vet to have him examined. after that, you need to (re)socialize him to the dark park. As Sabi said, you need to be the pack leader. Might sound corny, but its true.

Buy his dog is fighting other dogs in a dog park. You can be alpha all you want at home, but how do you stop this around other dogs away from the house? I have the same problem.

If you're in Baton Rouge, get a muzzle and a prong collar and bring him to South Park in Denham by the Bass Pro on Saturdays at 8 AM. There's a large socialization class run by Larry Benoit held there. Gives you a chance to expose him to other dogs and correct him on the spot.

No health problems that I've noticed, and yes, he's neutered. Socialization isn't the problem, he grew up with my buddies' dogs putting him in his place 3-4 days a week and he's been to the dog park a few times a week since he got all his vaccines. He's fairly submissive for the most part, and even gets along well with other dogs most of the time, or at least used to.
I've noticed that he'll often try to rough house with a few dogs that don't seem too happy about it and take it the wrong way, although he means no harm. The fights also seem to happen with those little rat-dogs that bark at everything he does, even though he's just trying to play.
Could it be that he's just trying to assert himself as the alpha? I used to live with my buddy and his 2 dogs who would always put him in his place, but now that he's the only dog in the house, he's become a little to confident or cocky?

same way. you be the pack leader regardless of location. You can correct bad behavior by a dog in public. You can't beat the shite out of him or make a spectacle of yourself, but nothing wrong with disciplining him in front of others.

Also, he did finally just start lifting his leg to piss and scent marking trees/poles a few months or so ago. Not sure if that is playing a role or not.

are you sure they got it all when they cut him?
I don't know how familiar you are with horses, but when they cut a stud, if they don't get everything the gelded horse can act like a stud still, even though he can't breed. he's still producing testosterone and it makes him act, well usually like an a-hole. They refer to it as being proud cut, or Cryptorchid, meaning that he has some un-descended testicular tissue that is capable of producing Testosterone. As far as I know, its not limited to horses at all, and if he started displaying typically intact male behavior at the same time that he started acting more aggressive and assertive with other dogs, I would check into that, he may be feeling some oats that you thought were harvested.

I think you hit the nail on the head, didn't know that was possible in dogs. I'll get the vet to check him out next time around

This is the answer.
My chocolate lab doesn't meet other dogs well. He is in a one dog house and he was also the biggest of his litter. Will usually run up on them aggressively. He won't fight just puts them on the defensive. I told him he was going to do that one day to a dog who was going to make him regret it. That being said, after a couple of minutes with another dog he usually will be best buds with him.
