NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Advocate reports that NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas will retire.

Serpas, was sworn in to the position in May, 2010 under Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

Murder, the most watched crime statistic in the city, has been on a downward trend under Serpas, however there have continued to be high-profile shootings that have brought the department under scrutiny. In addition, the NOPD has had a problem recruiting officers, the staffing at a several-year low.

Ronal Serpas is out as police chief in New Orleans.

After four often-rocky years on the job, Serpas will announce his retirement as New Orleans police superintendent at a news conference today, according to a source with knowledge of his plans.

What Serpas plans to do next is unclear.

Lt. Michael Harrison, police commander of the 7th District, will serve as interim NOPD superintendent.

The announcement was sudden, but shouts for Serpas’ resignation punctuated much of his tenure. The loudest came from police officer groups embittered about several issues, including reforms to the off-duty detail system and a stiff disciplinary regime that led to the termination of scores of cops on grounds that many viewed as specious or arbitrary. Serpas, the chorus went, never had their backs.

As recently as last week, newly elected City Councilman Jason Williams suggested in a little-noticed web broadcast last week that at least five members of the council were prepared to terminate Serpas — a power bestowed by the city charter but never before exercised.

I knew after his latest goof last week about the officer shooting that his time was limited. Nashville tried to warn us about him.

They put the police commander from the district with the second most murders in the city in charge. Makes sense.

If there was going to be a "last straw", then last week's police shooting that didn't get disclosed, I thought, would be it. I guess I was right.

I thought he gave it his all, but he proved to be not the right skill set for the job. A change was needed.

Being the commander of a district including Lakeview or somewhere else similiar doesn't necessarily make one a good district commander.

And wouldn't it make sense for the council to do productive things like plan a pay raise to hire better officers instead of going after Serpas? He clearly sucks but it's not like some superintindent is going to magically fix problems like low pay or what not without their help.

right but it starts at the top, the entire NOPD is a complete shite show, and Mitch had to do something to save face. No doubt he forced Serpas into this

Now they need to raise the pay, hire more educated and experienced officers. Time to cut the fricking bullshite

Good luck with that. This is New Orleans, after all. Hope it happens but I can't imagine they have a lot of eager candidates knocking down the door.

shite like this reminds me of the The Wire. Crime gets bad or too much in the public spot light and city hall just changes a face or two at the top. Until things like you said are addressed, the problems will ultimately remain the same.

Well, they finally got their heads out of their asses and dropped the residency rule a few months back. It was a good move, but I can't figure out why the fck it took so long.

Hopefully this will increase moral and maybe they can retain some officers.
