This weekend a friend of mine who rides a bike wiped out, broke a leg really bad, and banged his head up so bad he couldn't remember who he was for a few minutes. Fortunately he had on a full coverage helmet.

I also know a guy who was in a coma for 6 months - has no idea how the accident happened - and another guy who was a hit and run victim and has trouble talking now.

My own father has one leg shorter than another due a biking accident in his youth.

None of these people were big risk takers other than the bike riding. None of the accidents were even their fault.

EDIT - and at least two of them, including the dude in the 6 month coma - didn't have health insurnace. The guy with the coma has a $750,000 bill he can't pay and never will.
Dude motor bikes are fricking dangerous!

They are dangerous, especially when you're getting butt checked.

Moving from Louisiana to Texas where it is legal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet it surprised me that so many people get on the roads without a helmet.

Most accidents are new rider or new bike accidents. Once you have been riding for several years and put in the saddle time, its relatively safe. It improved my driving skills as well.

Its not for everyone, but its very therapeutic.

3 of 4 in the OP were experienced riders

Its likely not your driving skills - on a bike or a car - that would be the problem - but the lack of driving skills of the drivers around you. You cannot control that. Be safe and good luck.

It's not safe even with experience. Freshman year of high school I saw a girl get hit when the car in front of me pulled out in front of her, and had her die while I was checking her pulse after cutting her helmet strap (to stop choking not take the helmet off) and trying to talk her back from shock. She wasn't speeding or doing anything wrong, just commuting to work at 6:30 in the morning. A long time friend of mine died the same way almost a year ago. I don't give a damn how good of a rider you are, some things just can't be avoided.

14, October 19 was the date and I didn't turn 15 until January. My mom was driving me to school when it happened, it was surreal. We just knew she was in trouble so my mom blocked the road (major 4 lane divided highway with her SUV and we both had some limited medical training through Boy Scouts and my moms training as a school VP. We couldn't just wait for emergency personal and watch her die, we had to try to help. We met her boyfriend when he got to the scene who told us more about her. She was 23 just graduated from UCF and was working at NASA, and he had already bought the ring that he was going to propose to her with that following weekend. That poor guy was devastated.

wow that's rough. sorry you had to go through that. but yeah, I'm not worried about my motorcycle skills, I'm worried about the other idiots on the road. That's why I wouldn't ever ride on the streets.

As much as I loved riding dirt bikes growing up, there's no way I'd ever ride a bike on the street.

If it wasn't for the airbag...I would've been ejected from my truck and probably be dead. I was basically scalped...most of my hair was stuck in the windshield
