Ferguson riots play big in Russia

In the United States, “which has positioned itself as a ‘bastion of human rights’ and is actively engaged in 'export of democracy' on a systematic basis, serious violations of basic human rights and barbaric practices thrive,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Friday, in a special commentary on the situation in Ferguson. “We would like to advise American partners to pay more attention to restoring order in their own country, before imposing their dubious experience on other states.”
The United States' problems with racism have long been a favored topic for Russians, dating back to the heyday of the Soviet Union.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Soviet leaders pointed to the existence of Jim Crow laws in the United States as a way of asserting the moral superiority of the Soviet Union. Racism, which was illegal in the Soviet Union, was deemed a systematic byproduct of capitalism.
In the civil rights era, especially, the Soviet Union used American anti-black racism as fodder to challenge the United States’ claims to leadership of the “free world.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the “police murder of an African-American teenager in the city of Ferguson” had happened in the context of the United States' generally “inhumane” treatment of black Americans, listing medicinal testing and forced sterilization of inmates who are “mostly black,” as well as police abuse of non-whites.

Russia
They have no riots cause they would systematically eliminate all participants.
What a worthless fricking country.

Obama should draw a redline around Ferguson.

It is true that one big catalyst for the passing of the CRA was the Soviets were beating Kennedy over the head with things like this. Sad but true. Pols like Eisenhower and Kennedy would have been fine just "leaving it to the states" and turning a mostly blind eye. It took the reds to push them over the edge.

It's not like we watched Ukraine feeds and made assumptions.

You're missing the point. Riots stem from protests, generally speaking. You have to be a relatively open society to allow protests. I'd rather live somewhere with sporadic riots resulting from free assembly and expression (however tangentially) rather than somewhere with ostensible stability because the people know they'll 'disappear' if they act up or dissent

This is predictable. The civil rights movement was covered extensively by the Soviet press, which broadcast their reports of violence all over the world in over 30 languages. Ironically, Russia is notoriously racist, but they don't pass up an opportunity to champion the cause of Black Americans for the same reason that David Duke doesn't pass up an opportunity to champion the Palestinian cause.

I have no problem with protests. But riots and looting is another story.
But let's not forget that right now people are breaking the law by not being at home after curfew.

I have no sympathy for looters and rioters. Whether it's in Oxford, MS in 1962 or Ferguson, MO in 2014, rioters in a free and democratic society deserve to have their heads cracked.

This
The race baiting (especially the series of it) doesn't help the US on the world stage.
I promise you it isn't just the Russian media that is hitting negative on this. They are just doing it harder than most.

Those words could have easily been pulled from MSNBC, DailyKos, or evrry other speaker at a Dimocratix National Convention.

The one thing that's different now than 50 years ago, is that both the President and the top cop are Black. However, I still don't think things are as bad as they were after the Rodney King verdict.

If you watch World's Wildest Police Videos" you would think Russians riot all of the time.
They probably watch our riot to see if they can throw some new wrinkles in their own riot game.
North Korea will show this as an average day in any American city.

This doesn't even scratch the surface of the LA riots in 1992. Of course that was a huge urban area but that city was on the verge of coming unhinged.
