Discovered a raccoon in my attic yesterday

I've been hearing something scratching around during the daylight hours in my soffit and yesterday I could clearly hear it in the attic. So I went up there with a flashlight and there she/he was staring back at me. I tried some makeshift traps last night but didn't catch it and now it's back up there. I know he's getting up there via my tree and gap he's made in the soffit. Anyone ever experienced this? Did you call a professional or trap him yourself? I'm probably going to call a professional tomorrow morning. Just wondering if there is an easy way to take care of this, like trim the tree in the middle of the night when he's gone.

You can try lights and music. That can sometimes be effective in running them off...

Get a real trap and catch him with food in it.

FYI- Depending on how long it has been living in the attic and the wording of your homeowner's insurance, you could have coverage under your policy...
Even if you do have coverage, it might not be in your best interest to file a claim...

Don't be a pansy. Shoot it and then go retrieve that nasty sucker.

I had the same problem. I got this advice from a trapper and it worked. Wait until the late evening when the raccoon is most likely to have left your attic to feed/roam. Then secure the opening so it cannot reenter your attic. Raccoon has to go somewhere else and problem solved. The trick is being sure the raccoon has left, because if you seal it in the attic eventually you are going to have to hunt for a smelly dead coon.

I have seen them make new openings...

This. I had a momma coon raising babies-watched her leave out at dusk, and placed a trap in her path. Don't bait with catfood, you'll end up with your neighbors cats in the trap. (sidenote: spray the shite out of them with the hose prior to release-tends to reduce future trespassing).
Baited with marshmallows, scored first night. Hand grabbed 3 of the babies, the other became a statistic. Small enough the smell dissipated quickly.

1. Place a large live trap in the attic with cat food and
2. seal the hole and cut the branch
3. Check the trap each day and remove the extremely pissed off raccoon and relocate it far away or whatever.
4. Then place the trap back up there and rebait it to see if there are others. Look for baby coons also.
Don't forget to check the trap daily or things get ugly quickly.......--->from experience.
good luck

yeah, whatever. Then if you aren't comfortable with that then let it go outside the attic or kill it?
