bought a cool vintage piece that has a hole on each side to hang and I want to hang it on my patio which is brick

how do I go about doing this?

- do I drill into the brick or the mortar?
- do I need specialty screws or will generic work?

TIA

In the brick, not the mortar.

Go to Home Depot and buy a masonry bit and the blue screws that are usually right by the bits.

I got into the mortor.. I tried drilling into brick before and burnt out my drill battery before I was a 1/3 of the way in... yes, it was a masonry bit.

Depending on how heavy it is I would consider masonry anchors. Use a hammer drill if possible.

Eta: yes always go into brick and not mortar

Something light drill thought the brick with an anchor set, drill, pop in plastic insert, then screw in screw.

Something heavy drill through the mortar and use the appropriate sized toggle bolt.

Something medium weight go with a tapcom screw in the mortar.

Unless it's extremely light weight you should use anchors and go into brick
