And it was awesome!!!!
My company has been facing significant market challenges recently and I've been pretty unhappy with the company response so I've been mulling over a couple of job offers that both start in October. One of them is pretty attractive and I think I may take it.
I had a normally scheduled quarterly meeting with my CEO this week and spent the morning preparing to tell him I was considering resignation. I walked into the room and before I had a chance to say a word, he tells me he has difficult news to deliver and I knew what was coming. My first thought was "damn, I didn't see this coming, he beat me to it." Then . . . I remembered the pre-negotiated severence package in my contract.
Yeah, it would be a better story if I was walking in to resign, but I'll take it.
Because he was so quick on the trigger, I walk away with a lump sum payment for 3+ months through the end of November and get to enjoy a couple of months off on his dime while I decide what's next.
So I played The Bluffs today, most relaxing and best scoring round of golf I've had in years.
I hope you can all enjoy being fired some day as much as I did!

Were you in a two-some that was dicking off with music in your cart while the three-some behind you caught up?

Your boss either likes you or he's an idiot. Nonetheless, I'm happy for you.

Glad to see you handling it positively, and I hope you find something soon.
Is it common to negotiate for a severance package while bring hired?

In the position I was in, yes.
IMO it's better to negotiate as much as possible up front and get it all reviewed by an attorney. If you don't protect yourself, your company sure won't.

If you really want to put this thread over the top, put something in the OP about banging the OT 10 secretary on your way out.
