Great grandpa's savage 24 .22 over 410 OB Opinion

I got this rifle a few years back. The selector is broken and the stock has some cracking. The parts to replace the selector have been discontinued. I've had it at two different smith's shops for over three years trying to get it fixed but both failed.
I could buy another rifle (under $400 value) to use for donor parts and fix it myself (I guess)
My question: how much of an heirloom needs to be original to still be ggdad's rifle in your opinion?
Should I just not fix it and keep it as a keepsake heirloom?
The rifle has very little monetary value but huge sentimental value. I've never fired it and really would like to, at least once.
What's the OB's thoughts on this? WWYD?

That I a cool gun, but I wouldn't blow the bank on fixing it.
I was giving a old double barrel 12 ga from the 1890's that was FIL great, great grandpaws. It needs a little work, but I'm going to leave it as is. Besides, those old guns can't handle todays loads.

Will you spending the time to fix the gun make you feel a bit more connected to your gg and increase the sentimental value for you? That is your answer.
Personally, I probably would fix it, but I am a tinkerer by nature.

Thanks a lot. I may forego the email communications and call tomorrow. The hammer conversion kit that eliminates the selector is interesting but I feel like I should keep it original. We'll see.
Again, thanks for the info and research.

I found a company that has hard to find gun parts. Give them a try.
