Just got back from a few days of camping near the tiny busted mining town of Challis, Idaho. Every year, Challis plays home to the Braun Brothers Reunion, a music festival that features some great red dirt, Texas country, bluegrass, and folk bands. This year's line up featured the Turnpike Troubadors, Hayes Carll, Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, Randy Rogers, Chris Knight, Black Lillies, and Radney Foster (to name just a few).

In my opinion, Idaho may be the most underrated State as far as beautiful landscapes go. You can't beat the weather in August, low 50s at night, low 80s during the day. This is our 6th year going up for the festival. We camp near the base of the Sawtooth Mountains, and the whole area is surrounded by National Forest. Coming out of Louisiana, the amount of access into the National Forests out there blows my mind. "Here's some badass mountain country. Here's a few hundred miles of dirt road, do whatever the hell you want, just don't burn it down." A lot of the folks that come in for the show from Boise ride their dirt bikes and ATVs on Forest Service roads most of the way to Challis. The Salmon River runs right through the area and it has great fishing and rafting. I've only caught trout in the Salmon, but understand that there are infact...Salmon in the river.

If camping and good music is up your alley, and you're as tired of going to Burning Man as I am, you should check out the Braun Brothers Reunion next year. Hike, fish, drink, whathaveyou during the day, and listen to some good tunes at night. Its one of the friendliest crowds you could ask for and the Idaho ladies are...well...they're alright, not much to write home about...but you're in the mountains, so, take what you can get.

Nice

My family used to rent a cabin in Stanley every other summer or so for several weeks. Love that entire area. The Sawtooths are amazing and caught many trout in the Salmon.

Also went white water rafting down the Salmon and Snake Rivers multiple times.

Chris knight

Great singer/songwriter. Least sociable person ever. Not an a-hole, just not into people. For this swing, he was touring alone, driving a rental car, carrying his own gear, selling his own merch, and according to one of the other musicians, he cuts firewood when not playing to make ends meet. Most of the other musicians hang around for a day or two just to enjoy the scenery and party. He got in his car and was gone within an hour of finishing his set. Weird.

I agree. If I weren't in Ak, I'd be in Idaho. Friend of mine who works in Ak during the summers believes Idaho is more beautiful. She works in interior Ak though.

A little PSA painted on the side of a local gas station up there. While it was not something that proved to be an issue while I was up there, you've all been warned.

Idaho is an awesome place...went turkey hunting with a friend that lives in Lewiston in April. Missed my turkey but in one day saw 20 Bighorn sheep well over 100 elk and a bunch of mule deer all 45 minutes from my friends house.

You go with a guy with the initials of JH from port city?
ETA: I got invited to come meet you guys if so. But I couldn't get away from work. He has been going there for a while now so you have to be in the same group.

I've actually seen that sign before and took a picture.

I went through challis one time. When I worked for lsu doing grain breeding, we did some work the usda research center in Aberdeen, one weekend we went and stayed up in salmon Idaho and fly fished.

I love Idaho

Nope. Definitely not me. If its the same JH, that guy does go out there every year between modeling shoots, winning American Ninja Warrior competitions, seducing women, and taking names.

We did. There were some locals nearby that kept yelling about the leeches in the water. I didn't see any, but they seemed concerned about it.
