One ship which just loaded with grain ran into another which is docked at IMTT.

The vessel which lost power is being guided to shore by tugs. It is leaking crude oil. Coast Guard, Gretna PD, fire are all on scene and consider the situation currently under control.

The Mississippi River is closed to all marine traffic between mile markers 96-98 at this time.

For craft that cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, they seem to be held together by bailing wire. You always hear of them losing steering or power at the most inconvenient times.

to be fair, you don't hear about it when everything works.

Like in every other mechanical/electrical enterprise, some will be short on cash & it comes out of the maintenance budget.

When is the last time you heard of a bad accident in the river with large ships?

It lost power. If you loose power in the Mississippi you're going to crash.

They're powered by engines and are prone to failure just like anything else is.

If all you can come up with is old River walk film, I'd say things have gone relatively well on the River.

So 1996?

I'd say that's pretty good considering the port of south LA is the busiest port in the U.S. (tonnage)
