Watching segment on CNN talking about it.

They said he was captured by US forces in 2004 as part of AQ but deemed a non threat and later released.

First I've heard of this

This is why I've always thought Gitmo was a bad idea. Either execute them after we've extracted intel, put them on trial and sentence them swiftly, or release them after interrogation. Releasing them after multiple years at Gitmo does nothing but make the Islamic rock stars who have nothing to lose and can be very influential.

No flame bro, but seriously? This has been a comment from the start of this current crisis. I don't bring it up because it is 20/20 hindsight. No rationale person says "Hey, I think you are going to form a major terrorist organization - let's set you free."

I am not going to give into the administration bashing on this issue.

He wasn't at Gitmo and was released in 2009.

Who is bashing the administration? Sounds like he would have been released under Bush

Cool. Please understand, I am not referring to you specifically. I am speaking in general to the way people post every mistake under the current administration as this catastrophic failure or dark conspiracy. Sometimes it is a well intentioned decision that was just wrong. The nature of being a leader at any level. It happens.

It was my understanding that he was released during the current administration (fairly certain I am correct but I need to double check).

Read the story OM yahoo earlier today, but was held over there, not in Gitmo, don't remember where. Think op is right about captured in 2004. Released 2009.

The analyst on CNN mentioned his detainment added fuel to him and helped his rise to power.

I am going to check them out online tomorrow and see if they are replaying the segment. Thanks for the tip.
