“I got a Band-Aid and a tetanus shot. How could it be $9,000? This is crazy,” Hanusz-Rajkowski said. “If I severed a limb, I’d carry it to the next emergency room in the next city before I go back to this place.”

He should sign up for Obamacare and say it was a pre-existing condition. Should be covered, right?

No fricking way his bill should be anywhere near close to 9k... Having said that
Exact fricking problem with morons like him. Obviously wasn't an emergency, but he decides to go to the emergency room instead of a regular doctor.
shite, now that I think about it, maybe he should pay 9k for his stupidity... And he is educating the youth of this country

I'm trying to figure out why he went to the ER in what sounds like a non-emergency situation.

Umm.... what the heck is he going tot he ER for a cut finger in the first place. A cut finger. Not a cut-off finger, just a normal cut finger. Idiot.

Nephew spent less than a day in the ER; more or less for observation. Got two snakebite anti-venom treatments @ $88K plus; probably didn't need the second...but the doctor was thinking lawyer instead of patient. Total bill...$181,000.
Our Vet lives next door. I told her to take me to him for antibiotics and pain meds; I'll sweat it out like my dogs always have.

Why did he wait days, then go to the emergency room?
If you can wait days, then go to a doc in a box

Go to a damn urgent care if it's not an EMERGENCY!! Our ER stays full of ear aches, sniffles, and simple bumps and bruises. Why do they go? Anyone with a brain knows the answer to that question.

...
Why was the bill so high?
If you tie up an ER bed and staff just like anyone else, you should be charged like anyone else. The unserious nature of your injury doesn't make the cost of the equipment and doctors any cheaper. They all get paid the same and cost the same.
And further if all you needed was a "band-aid and a tetanus shot" you shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Some people would rather get a $9,000 bill that they have no intention of ever paying instead of ponying up the hundred bucks or so at the urgent care.

$9,000 for a shot and a band-aid? Really?
Regardless if he should have went to the ER or not, that is a crazy amount of money for a shot, even with the ER premium added to the price.

I had a kidney stone last year and my entire bill was less than $2000 - and that includes an inital trip to an urgent care center who told me that I had to go to the ER after doing a bunch of tests.
I know he's probably not getting the same rates as the insured patients, but that's an insane amount of money if all they did was what he said.

I did reply. The guy was a dumbass for going to the ER for that. Do you go to the Firestone store so you'll be charged for 4 tires if just one of them needs air? No you hop in the QuickMart, drop $.75 and get air.

Actually, he is insured.

Dr. Mark Spektor, president and CEO of the medical center, said the big bill is the fault of Hanusz-Rajkowski’s insurance company, United Healthcare, which no longer has an in-network pricing contract with the hospital

What idiot goes to the ER for a cut?
Morons like this guy are a good reason why our healthcare costs so much.

If my AC goes out in the morning and I wait till midnight to call someone, I am going to pay a premium price to have it fixed. No different here.
You will never change the thought process of people like this. No matter if you hand them insurance at no cost.

And I'll bet you've never been the same since, huh 12?
My on experience with k stones is exactly what coerced me to vote for Obama the first time, under his pretense of REAL health care reform. I'd feel sorry for bin Laden if he had a kidney stone.
Very enlightening.
Good luck to us both, buddy.
