We acquired a couple new leases in the marsh and I'm not all that familiar with the new places. I'd like to get a hand held GPS so I won't have trouble finding them in bad weather or fog.
I haven't played with GPSs in probably 10-12 years so I have no clue.
I know Garmin is good and Magellan has made some decent products in the past, but thats about it. I need to be able to be able to store about 10-15 routes at least.

Do you have a smart phone?

If that's all you need it for just get the Navionics app. It works great.

Will Navionics work even if you dont have a signal?

Don't think so. I could be wrong though as I've never been completely without signal.

ETA: I just put my phone in airplane mode and then avionics app found my location on the maps I've been using. It must store maps. My routes were available too so it must save that locally also.

I may start running the phone in airplane mode when fishing from now on. (Ignoring wife)

Yes.

It's why you download the portion of the map you want ahead of time while being connected to wifi.

But in airplane mode how does the app know where you are?

Don't know. It worked on my test. I guess airplane doesn't shut off the GPS transmitter/receiver.

On second thought, I'm at my house so it may have gone off of last known location. I'll leave it in airplane for a bit and see if it finds me at work.

Mine has offline maps. GPS works without data. One of the reasons I bought it. Lumina 920.

Motion X app works without service. I use it quite a bit in flooded timber.

It didn't work in airplane (wrong once again). It did work with cellular data turned off though.

Is that an AT&T phone? I need that capability bad bad.

I use my GPS from my garmin dog tracking system. Works great. I've had very good luck with garmin products, both handheld and hard mount.

I have a 5s. I want to be able to have the routes saved and have the ability to follow said routes. Even a little bit of fog out there makes the entire marsh look exactly the same. It's a sum bitch to get around like that, especially when your heading out in the dark. A spotlight does nothing but make it worse most of the time

This is what I use - didn't need all the fancy stuff just needed to be able to mark waypoints and find my way in and out in the dark.

Does it actually have routes? I want to be able to drop a point and then follow said route in and out if needed.
It's essential in that marsh. Like I said I know my way like the back of my hand to our current spots... But these new ones I won't have time to learn or will be going to on a regular basis. I need something. Especially if a friend comes and for some reason they need to be able to drive the boat back...

Yeah you can save and follow routes, I don't do this very often hunting the refuges, I usually just need to waypoint different spots to get in and out.

I've always wanted a Garmin Oregon. Anyone have one of those?

Since you are familiar.... What is the plus of moving up to the 20? I know there is more crap on it. Id prefer to spend $100, but if I need to get what I want I'd spend $200.
I'm going to look into those apps as well. I have reception everywhere we go.
I usually use my phone to help navigate. But, know way to track yourself... Hence the issue

Main differences in the 2 - here is thelink [link=(link)]https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/catalog/product/compareResult.ep?compareProduct=87771&compareProduct=87768[/link] to the comparison - probably biggest things are color display, micro SD slot on the 20 making it available to use with custom maps - phones are great but I prefer to carry an extra set of AA batteries and have 25hrs per set of batteries. There are positive and negatives to both..

I use my etrex legend hcx alot. I use it for bowhunting. It's got good built in basemaps, and I've uploaded higher quality basemaps to it for my hunting areas in LA and MS.
