So I get an out-of-the box surround sound, she gets a new washer/dryer combo....

Seems like the front-loads are worth spending a few hundred dollars more for, but what says you?

top load washer is the only way to go. I don't need my laundry room to look like a laundromat.

I have front load. They're nice, but not worth the extra money. If I did it again, I'd go HE top loader.

You may save $30-50 a year in utility costs with front loaders, but you will incur a greater rate of failure, and much more costly repairs.

I typically advise against front loaders, though I currently have a set myself (Only because they are LG Tromm units I paid less than $150 for)
The best you can get as far as washing ability and long term lasting. Would be a Whirlpool or Frigidaire set with a manual timer and knobs on the front. It will give you 20 years if taken care of.

front load dryer.

All dryers with the exception of the Fisher/Paykel

are "front load"

if you mean "glass or clear door" then actually the units are almost the exact same under the panel and drum. I do agree that the higher end dryers are more efficient and give more control. Also dryers cost a lot less to repair.

Did a lot of research on this back six months ago, unless you have limited room for the washer and dryer and plan on stacking them, a top load washer is the best option. Front loaders continue to improve, but top loaders improved their capacity and water efficiency to match.

also
stay away from the Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos line. (all made by Whirlpool but sold under Kenmore, Whirlpool and Maytag.)
Holy crap. These things have a long list of expensive issues.

Bearing failure - $300 (requires lengthy rebuild)

Control failure - $250

Motor control failure - $225

Stator failure - $195

And it seems that every single unit will have one of these go wrong.

And then on top of that, you will over time stretch the supports and then the supports will need to be replaced. This happens quickly if a lot of heavy loads are used.
The drain and circulation pump are separate and each cost about $150 to replace. Fail rate is high on the drain pumps as well.

These units are lemons for the most part.

If you get a top loader you want direct drive.
It's a shame too, because I like what Whirlpool had designed, but they are just so finicky.

the only reason I would go front load is to have some work directly above.

Other than that I have never heard people that have one being happy with it.
