The Gaslight Anthem - Get Hurt

Early reviewers are tearing this album apart. I've given it a few spins and while it is different it isn't like Brian Fallon is playing the electric flute throughout the record. It still has all the staple gaslight stuff but the shtick is a little less obvious (ie., no jukebox, maria, or carnival references).
All in all, pretty solid to me. Think I might enjoy this more than handwritten with time. We will see.

I have listened to the full thing twice now and I really like it. I was actually getting ready to start a very similar thread. It seems like they are actively being a little less Springsteenish and I think it works well.

Haven't heard it yet but it will be hard to beat handwritten that album was GREAT

I've only listened a couple times but so far I'm not a huge fan. I like their older stuff better. Give me American Slang FTW.

I tried to listen to it but just couldn't get into it. I liked their previous 3 albums but this one is just flat out terrible IMO

i believe the lead singer said he expected no more than 1 in 5 reviews to be positive - but that "it was a record he had to make" after his divorce.

It helps to know that Brian went through a divorce as he was writing this one. That explains many of the dark lyrics that you would normally find on a horrible crowes album.
And did I mention how much I love the way this album ends with a throwback to the backseat? It's much more dreary than the explosive, endless Saturday night feel of the 59 sound. This reminds me a lot of darkness on the edge of town in that we've finally caught up to the characters of t59s and they aren't the star crossed lovers anymore. They're burned out and broken. '...one by one we drifted away...'

I've listened to this front to back about 5x in a row. Love about 70% of the songs and the 30% that I don't like are just really flat.
I still want to see them live as a headliner. At Voodoo last year, as a mid-card with about a 40 minute set, they were flat.

Ok finally listened to it thanks to someone uploading it on youtube. It's bad.. I like the song get hurt and a 1 or 2 others are catchy other than that it's weird and boring.

I'm all about doing something different but Handwritten was sooooo good. They spoiled me with that record. Hopefully they come out with an EP or something to redeem themselves.

The more I listen, the more I realize the ones I like, I really like and the ones I didn't care for in the beginning, I really don't like.
