After seeing the recent yard questions here, I figured I'd solicit help from the OB about my yard.

First, what kind of grass do I have? I just moved to the Dayton, Ohio area and I'm not sure if it's bluegrass or what. At first I thought Bermuda, but it looks different than the Bermuda I'm used to. Any help is appreciated. Here's some pics of the grass.

Front Yard

Back Yard

Also, the front yard is pretty thin compared to the thick back yard. So for lawn maintenance, what would you recommend as far as fertilizing throughout the year (pre-emergent, summer, winterizer, etc.)? Also, what products would you recommend for weed control? Right now we have a few dandelions, some clover, and the white flowering weed you see in the last picture.

I'd like to avoid paying someone else to maintain the yard, so I'm trying to get educated. Thanks for the help!

I'll take a look tomorrow but I don't think any seed heads are visible right now. If they are, I'll snap a picture and upload it.

I just walked the yard and there aren't any seed heads right now.

Will the type of grass determine what type of products to use or am I safe with normal store bought stuff like Scotts brand fertilizers and weed control?

The only weeds I see are the dandelions and the white flowering weed in the pics. I do have some small patches of clover also. Any specific product to use?

That is fescue or perennial ryegrass both of which are common in that area and look similar. I think it is fescue. It is common to overseed with more seed once a year or so to get the thick stand you want. You can over seed now with a turf type fescue. (Do not buy coated seed--seed companies are using the coating to lower their cost. They are replacing weight in the bag with the coating--some are as much as 50%).

Fertilizer in the spring and summer but I would not now given how late it is.

There are lots of weed control products. I would wait to spring on that too. You will likely get a frost there before the end of October and most of your weeds will not survive it.

Don't mow as short as you would bermuda grass.
