I went looking for snakes behind my subdivision in the Honey Island Swamp area (subtle manliness brag thread) and ran across something I was unfamiliar with.

The shavings, I assume, are consistent with beaver activity - though I've never seen any in this area, and I've walked this territory pretty extensively. Also, the tree damage extends far too high - unless beavers have involved into skilled climbers. Likewise, I ran into a similar tree that only had higher damage and no wood chips around it.

Squatch? Swoopeda? Black bear?

Off Military Rd?
I used to hunt all behind the two schools there. Shot some deer back there. Was some real pretty woods back there many years ago. The pines were huge when you got closer to the river.

Something looking for grubs, so either black bear or pileated woodpecker.

Is the bottom part from a beaver? I've never seen woodpeckers leave large wood chips like that or destroy a tree that extensively. A pecker getting some of that beaver action?
