I want to say Leaf because he was being compared to Manning and some folks even thought he was better than Manning. Jamarcus' competition was who....Brady Quinn?

Russell.

Leaf wasnt even the #1 QB when he was drafted.

Russell was the #1 overall.

Arguments can be made both ways. Leaf was almost picked ahead of Peyton Manning which is laughable now. Jamarcus was #1 in a bad QB year. They both sucked hard.

At least Russell gave the Raiders ahalf way decent season and a half. Russell also never went to prison.

This. Leaf would have been #1 if Peyton wasn't in that draft.

I say it's a wash. Leaf had more hype coming out. But at least he played in the league for a few years. JR washed out in a flash.
Where they were drafted means nothing. One was #1 in a down year for QBs, the other was #2 because he happened to be in the same draft as the one of the GOATs

Would love to know how JR's career would have turned out if he went into a stable franchise.

Him going to the Raiders was the worst possible match.

Lane Kiffin was a horrible coach for a horrible franchise, and he was pretty vocal about not wanting JaMarcus.

In my mind, Leaf.

I expected Russell to crater out in the pros.

Million dollar arm, $.05 head.

How was San Diego when Leaf went there? I was too young to remember what their franchise was like at the time. But I do give JR a little slack just because Oakland was already amid a full on dumpster fire upon his selection and arrival.

JR with a better franchise and a good mentor... Would be interesting to see what he could have done. Just goes to show that there's a lot more to the game than talent alone.

Leaf was the bigger bust IMO.

Im going Leaf for the simple fact that no one ever expected anything out of the Raiders.

if I remember right, his rookie year their defense would have been pretty good.

they had Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison. I think Leaf either got hurt or in trouble though because the next year in 1999, he missed the whole season.

I think.

Russell didn't exactly enter a great situation either. Kiffin didn't want him and then Al Davis made an arse out of himself and Kiffin with his odd press conference after the draft that year I think. Al Davis and Lane Kiffin clearly weren't on the same page.

Russell actually won more games than Leaf did as a starter though.

Russell: 7-18
Leaf: 4-17

Could go either way, but I'd say Jamarcus.
