Chase Freedom CC

Morning all,
I'm paying for my last year of school on my own...out of state tuition is kicking my butt, and have been denied in-state tuition residency for a 3rd time. Now, all of the money I've made this summer interning will be put towards paying the remainder of my fee bill instead of paying for rent, utilities, etc.
I've been considering getting a credit card recently to pay for gas, groceries, and in case of emergency (car breaks down, hospital visit, etc). I have good credit for someone who has never financed anything or had a credit card, and was wondering if any of you had an opinion on the Chase Freedom card as a first CC. I wouldn't be using it for more than $200/mo on misc purchases listed above, and I know all too well that credit is a big game, so any input would be appreciated!

Getting a credit card in college can be pretty dangerous. I would advise against it in your case. I'd really make do some soul searching and make sure you can be responsible with it. So many college kids get screwed by credit cards due just being young and immature.
That card is fine. I'm a big fan of the chase sapphire card if you're looking for travel rewards.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. A year ago there's no way I'd be ready to take on that kind of responsibility. I'll have a steady job (another internship) when I get back to BR, and at 23 years old and having previously worked in Tigerland for several years, I've outgrown the partying, at least until I graduate

Right now you can get $100 back and 0% for over a year, just don't rack it up...work during school if you have to.

My plan would be to pay minimum monthly (however, I'd be taking a big chunk out of it, since I'll spend <$400) until winter break when I'd be working 40 hour weeks...From there, I'd pay off the remaining balance until it was neutral then start that again in the spring. Graduate in May, employed by June, then hammer down the balance

You'll just be in the same bind next semester. Sounds like you should just get a student loan

Student loan has reached a limit...Had some financial problems due to a family member's vast medical expenses and subsequent passing (don't mean to be a debbie downer), and my private student loan company says I'm at my max. Thanks, out of state tuition...

I have the Chase Freedom card and I have enjoyed it so far. I would certainly recommend getting one as long as you can be responsible. Getting a credit card in college can be a great play or it can weigh you down with unnecessary debt on top of student loans.
As the saying goes, "famous last words."
I use my credit cards for every purchase I make outside of the occasional cash/check payment. The past three months I have seen my spending increase 10 fold (minor exaggeration) and some of the spending increase is due to my comfort in putting charges on my credit card. A comfort I have not had with spending except for my freshman and sophomore years in college. Pre-CC days I would have avoided buying some of the things that are now showing up on my monthly transactions. The bulk of the excess spending is due to wedding and honeymoon plans which can rob you of your financial dignity before ever sealing the deal in the first place

Freedom is a great card.
Why a private student loan? Fill out your FAFSA and get a government student loan.

I have filled out FAFSA, and after speaking with one of their representatives, I've learned that I received the maximum amount of Unsubsidized, Subsidized, and Pell Grant aid. Therein lies my issue. I applied for in-state tuition and gave all necessary documents: LA birth certificate, LA drivers license (since 2010), bank account information (registered in Baton Rouge), voter registration card (since 2010), Louisiana and Federal Tax Returns (2011, 2012, 2013), resident hunting and fishing licenses (2011, 2012, 2013), and countless other documents showing constant residency and presence in Louisiana, even when not enrolled in classes, but they still fricked me

I'm 23, single, no kids, and am anticipating a beginning salary (in June) of ~$65K, so no wedding charges for me anytime soon!

It sounds like you're in enough debt as it is... a CC may not be the best route here.

Well, that's a solid standing offer I've received from a company that said it is good and set for 30 days following graduation

I don't care what the details are... that's 10 months away and anything can happen. It's worth absolutely nothing to you until you actually have the job.

Very true, I am all too familiar with situations changing at the drop of a hat
