Does Guardians of the Galaxy promote able-ism? SPOILERS

I went to see the movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, last Saturday with two of my friends. Both of which are huge Marvel fans. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie but the two of my friends had certain issues with a running gag regarding Rocket the raccoon.
During the prison escape planning scene, Rocket remarks that they need an amputee prisoner's prosthetic leg, also remarking that the prisoner was "useless" without it in a joking manner.
I glanced over at my friend noticing that he, as an amputee, was visibly upset at this scene. My friend, only-one-leg Matt, lost his leg in a trampoline accident when he was four and also had a prosthesis.
Noticing tears beginning to form in his eyes, I leaned over and said to him, "That's pretty insensitive, they're pretty much talking about you." He didn't say anything and got up and left the theater. I've never seen him leave the theater before during a movie.
Toward the end of the movie, during the final battle planning scene. Once again, the rodent made another disabled person joke regarding a character with a fake eye. My other friend, One-Eye Patrick, didn't appear to be too upset with the scene. Patrick had lost his left eye in a fishing accident. Witnessing Matt's reaction, I placed my hand over Patrick's, to comfort him.
He threw his popcorn into the floor and also got up and left.
Though I enjoyed the movie, I did find scenes insensitive to disabled people. I tried to talk to my friends about it on the ride home but they were silent with rage and sadness over the movie. I'm just curious as to the changes the writers could have made if they were aware of able-ism; so that the movie would be more appealing to all audiences and not offensive to those with prosthetic limbs or organs.

Lame post is lame.
The best part of your post is you thinking you were consoling your imaginary friend with that p.o.s. comment to him.
