That's a nice, logical article. I really can't stand the homogenous uberfestival deal any longer with cookie cutter lineups (I'm too old for one thing).
Also, if I'm going to see a band, I want to see that band in an ideal situation that they manage (their light show, setup, and amount of time they wish to play), not a scenario dictated by festival owners and fans with various competing ideas and interests. I want to immerse myself in the experience of a particular artist, not a collage of tons of different ones.
I do love my local Roots Festival though, which is similar to some of the smaller festivals the article talks about. It's a bunch of folk and indie-folk type artists (this year Lucinda Williams, Jay Farrar, Hurray for the RiffRaff, Darrell Scott & Tim OBrien, etc..) plus they celebrate local foods. So they have a bunch of food events in conjunction with the music events where all the chefs buy their produce from the Farmer's Market. Plus, the festival is spread out throughout the town, so there are a lot of different venues ranging from big concert hall type venues to small dive bars.
Plus, I get to wake up in my own bed every morning.

interesting viewpoint.
I think we will see somewhat of a shift from the mega festival spanning all different genres towards somewhat smaller festivals geared towards a specific audience.

The only reason festivals even exist are for underage kids to go and get hammered on whatever drug they are given. I live in chicago and lollapalooza is a joke.
EDIT: Nice job Lolla

Yeah. Back in the day, we did it by following one band around. It was a traveling festival every time the Dead pulled into town. Now it's some big corporate sponsored event with umpteen million bands playing crappy sets.

the bubble is bands demanding more and more money from the highest bidding festival. and getting it. the prices go up more and more...
hangout is $249 per ticket plus fees and tax in 2015

Nah, I was in the pit yesterday in Houston for Metal Mayhem fest. The issue? I'm 57! Once you get out, nothing like live music!
