What is Utopia?
“Is this a documentary or a reality show?” might be your first question.
It’s neither. First and foremost, 'UTOPIA' is a social experiment. Fifteen people enter a new world and must build a new society from the ground up. Right away, they’re left completely on their own. In Utopia, moments will be caught, not shaped. There will be no production crew inside Utopia at any time. We’ve installed 129 inconspicuous cameras — some dangling from trees, others wedged between floorboards — that are never to be addressed. At no point will community members pour their hearts out, confessional-style, in attempts to heighten drama or shift your perception of their characters. Utopia isn’t a stage — it’s a window.
These are the Utopians' real lives, their only lives. What’s important is the conversations they'll have, the work they'll accomplish, and the way they’ll make this place whatever they want it to be.
Have you ever stared in wonder at an ant farm? Well, this one is bigger — and it can talk!
There’s no prize. There's no specific goal. This is a living soap opera — reality TV in its purest form. And you get to be there every step of the way. August 29 is day one for our Utopians. The minute they move in is the minute the experiment begins. Cameras on; guards down. Our 24/7 live streams debut more than a week before our broadcast premiere!
What happens next...well, it’s anyone’s guess! What we know, you know. And that’s what makes this journey into the unknown so exciting!
The 15 Utopians
Dedeker Winston - 26 - Belly Dancer - Los Angeles (https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/15/dedeker-1)
In Utopia, Dedeker wants everyone to feel safe, warm, and comfortable… with her non-traditional sexuality: polyamory! “I’m not a freak. I’m not a sex addict. This is not a kink,” says the liberal lover, who hopes to educate fellow Utopians on a little-known curriculum.
Aaron Thomas - 26 - Chef - Jackson, MS(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/28/aaron-1)
“Food is life,” says this former military man who knows what a good meal can mean to a hungry community. A hopeless romantic and fantastic forager, Aaron envisions a Utopia free of class divisions and full of nuts and berries.
Andrea Cox - 38 - Raw Vegan Chef - San Diego, CA(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/31/andrea-1)
No longer part of the show
“I’m a Christian who drops the F-bomb,” announces our detox diva, who would resort to cannibalism before killing or eating an animal. Utopians beware: “When I snap, I can be a little bitchy and manipulating to get my way,” the self-proclaimed born-again virgin warns. She has left the compound
Bella Chartrand - 45 - Doomsday Prepper - Griffin, CA(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/16/bella)
If there’s one person prepped for success in Utopia, it’s naked yoga enthusiast Bella, known as “the peppy prepper with a purpose” in her Southern hometown. “I’d rather be digging a hole than on a date,” says Bella, who nonetheless remains “open to the possibility of having a child in Utopia.”
Bri Nyugen - 20 - Veterinary Technician - Westminster, CA(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/18/bri-1)
“It would nice to be the prettiest girl in Utopia -- that way, I could have my pick of the men,” says the first generation Vietnamese-American free spirit, who’s passionate about animal rights and makin’ jam!
Chris Tuorto - 25 - Chili Farmer - Cary, NC(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/12/chris-1)
He’ll infuse your spirit with happiness and burn your mouth with the hot peppers he farms with his family. Chili charmer Chris loves inspiring others, working as a team, and finding beauty in all he beholds. Well, maybe not everything. “Bible bangers drive me nuts,” he says.
David Green - 31 - Unemployed - Queens, NY(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/14/dave)
“On paper, I’m written off,” says 5th Avenue Dave, a former drug dealer and burglar who’s been in and out of jail since 17. “I wanna show the world that ex-convicts and felons can make a change.”
Amanda Scott - 30 - Behavioral Specialist - Seattle, WA(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/30/amanda-2)
“I’m pregnant, but not powerless,” says Amanda, who plans to keep the baby a secret as long as she can in Utopia. Her work with developmentally challenged children reaffirms her belief that if “everyone treated each other like family, the world would be a better place.”
Hex Vanisles Bondy - 25 - Unemployed - Detroit, MI(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/13/he)
Don’t call her Katniss. Sure, headstrong hunter Hex is six feet of “twisted steel and sex appeal,” but her primary game is to bring lessons from Utopia back to Detroit, her hometown.
Jonathan Lovelace - 44 - Pastor - Church Hill, TN(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/26/jonathan)
“When I go to Utopia, God goes to Utopia,” proclaims this human being, who hopes to build a church and baptize His fellow Utopians. Really! Preacher Jon believes that God must be at the center of any Utopia, and hopes to rally the others for weekly services.
Josh Johnston - 36 - General Contractor - Salt Lake City, UT(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/19/josh)
“You can’t build a house without a general contractor, and you can’t build Utopia without me,” says Josh the Builder, a self-proclaimed “sexy beast” excited to help other people (into bed) and model his vast collection of “banana hammocks.”
Mike Quinn - 33 - Attorney - New York City, NY(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/29/mike-1)
“My strengths are definitely in government, not in working,” says lawyer Mike, a serial dater who’s packing work boots… for some other Utopian to wear. “We have a much better chance of creating a society if I’m managing the rules.”
Nikki Noce - 29 - Holistic Doctor - Brooklyn, NY(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/20/nikki)
An ideal society won’t take shape overnight, but don’t expect that to phase Dr. Nikki. After all: “It’s not about the orgasm, it’s about the process,” says the holistic doctor and tantric sex enthusiast sure to take a hands-on approach to communal living.
Red Vanwinkle - 42 - Handyman, Moonshiner - Cecilia, KY(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/17/red)
The self-proclaimed “backwoods hillbilly” is a jack of all trades who won’t tolerate fools in Utopia. “I can fix just about anything,” he says, “but there ain’t no fixin’ stupid.”
Rob Hospidor - 38 - Security Programmer - South Amboy, NJ(https://www.utopiatv.com/participant/detail/27/rob-2)
“I’m a G**damn patriot,” says proud Jersey son Rob, who’s excited to represent “the real ‘Merica” in a Utopia he suspects will be filled with “liberals, hippies, kumbayahs, and hairy-legged broads.” Good luck, bro!

So am I correct that as people are exiled, new ones will come in? The show isn't as much a competition that has a winner, but a reality show that just runs until rating no longer justify keeping it on?
and I'm surprised that Under the Dome isn't suing them for that logo.

I'm not sure if that part has been finalized yet, but thats how it was in the Dutch version... but about the winner thing.. I believe there is an end game to it but I'm not sure. I have high hopes for it. It's made by the guy who did Big Brother, Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal and The Voice.
eta: from an interview with the creator
quote:
Variety: How does it play out? Do people get voted out?
de Mol: It’s not a competition. We cast 15 people in the beginning. They have no influence in who the other 14 people are. Still, we thought we should give the group the opportunity to get rid of the rotten apples, if any, and replace them with fresh blood. I’m not going to reveal yet what the structure is going to be because it’s quite exciting and new.
quote:
Variety: How did you cast it?
de Mol: Of course you have character casting, archetypes. But in “Utopia,” you’re also looking at skills. Because if you put 15 people together on a deserted piece of land, with no electricity, no water, no toilets, nothing, just a little bit of money and an old phone, you need skills to give them a fair chance to create an infrastructure to get electricity, to get water, to create bathrooms. So you need a plumber. You need a carpenter. You need someone who is a doctor or a medic. So that is an extra layer in casting that you don’t have with other reality shows.

I think it's a cool concept, though you have to wonder what the cast was promised, or question what kind of lives they had, if any, to give up a full year of their lives to do this.

Nah, those were only people who auditioned. They haven't released the Utopian's names and info yet.

I work for a FOX Affiliate and we have been pushing this show pretty hard since it was announced in May... I just think it looks stupid overall, a bunch of people with conflicting ideals trying to create their ideal society... not going to work
Here is the promo sheet we have been sending out to advertisers:
You have one clown whose ideal society is "One Big Party" but how will any work get done, then you have another guy who has Democracy as his, why is he even here, and then the person whose ideal society is Organic, what is she going to be all militant and attack people who don't agree?
It will be one giant argument filled clusterfrick and thats it

That sheet is just a promo, we have no idea what the makeup of contestants is, but from what I understand from a friend who runs the fansite of the Dutch version, they cast people who have certain skills needed to build a utopia. Should give it a chance before you judge.

Ah, gotcha.
Good, because a lot of those people sucked.

They want content for commercials, but they want to keep the actual participants and gameplay secret for now. A lot of what you see in promos is acting.
