Heyy, this is a FOX show.. can't blame them for Kid Nation..blame the lawsuit happy parents.
I thought Kid Nation was a really cool concept. They weren't fully alone, and were given the choice to permanently leave when they got home sick.
The show was interesting in the types of choices it gave the kids when they won a completion: a need to make life easier, or a want that was some type of game or junk food.

Hadn't really heard of Utopia until now.
Welp, I'm pumped. Looks like everything I want out of BB that CBS doesn't give. Sign me up.

Exactly. This show is created by the guy who made big brother, but big brother was moved out of his control after season 1 so I expect it to be dramatically different.

KN was awesome, and we had some good discussion in the season thread. My sig pic for a while was that one bitchy girl...Taylor maybe? And the older dude who was an a-hole to everybody but then turned it around and was a favorite among the kids. Just entertaining television.

Fox is betting big bucks and a big chunk of its fall schedule on “Utopia,” an elaborate reality series that challenges 15 participants to build their own mini-society over a year’s time on a secluded five-acre site in Santa Clarita, Calif.
quote:
Fox aims to run “Utopia” for a full year, kicking off with a three-night premiere that starts Sept. 7 and episodes airing twice a week for several weeks thereafter. Beyond that, there’s an elaborate live-streaming service offering a 24/7 look at the goings on in the compound, including an no-holds-barred paid service. The 15 “Utopians” are set to move in on Aug. 29, when the live-streaming feed on UtopiaTV.com begins. Viewers can either watch 20 minutes a day for free or an unlimited feed for $4.99 a month.
quote:
Purpose built for the production, the “Utopia” compound is outfitted with a self-filtering lake, one pre-set housing structure for Utopia’s citizens, and a barn – currently the home of two dairy cows and twelve chickens that will become the responsibility of the society. There is no electricity, no water and no plumbing.
With the help of 129 robotic cameras the team will capture approximately 288 hours of film a day from the goings-on behind the gates of Utopia. The production will also boast an around-the-clock post-production team, monitoring the cameras, logging footage, editing and developing story for broadcast. No crew members will be present on the property itself — barring emergencies or necessary camera repairs — in an effort to create what Green calls “naturalistic storytelling.”
quote:
The citizens will start off their year with a sum of money, somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000, and will have to decide how to spend it, develop their own economy and build onto the existing structures at the compound should they desire. They are allowed a bag when they move in, though are barred from bringing any electronics or entertainment reading beyond the Bible or certain instruction manuals, and will have minimal communication with the production team to facilitate their function as a society.

New facts from the official site:
Once we flip them on, our 24/7 live streams will never switch off. Each new day will generate over 280 hours -- or 10TB, digitally speaking -- of footage.
We can’t stress this enough: In Utopia, there are no rules. This is a true microcosm, independently alive, its test subjects making everything up as they go along.
No production crew will be inside Utopia at any time -- just 129 high-definition robotic cameras operated in a control room far away from the Utopians.
Producers have curated the environment, but no one can accurately predict the experience. We’ll all be watching this human ant farm take shape together.
Even without cameras, our year-long sequester would be an unheralded social experiment. Throwing 15 outspoken Americans into a giant sandbox with no fixed agenda other than “Build something great!”? That’s madness!
Speaking of which: Inside Utopia’s “water tower” is a massive camera providing LED moonlight.
There’s no prize. Utopia has no “goal” save what its members decides on, together. The cows are so vital to the community, they’re practically main characters.
It’s the birth of a new society... and maybe new life. One of the First 15 is pregnant!
Participants could easily hop Utopia’s low-slung fences -- yet they can never leave.
YOU, however, may enter! If the Utopians decide to host public events, Passport Holders are welcome.
Casting is ongoing! Our regular replacement process means Utopia will constantly be seeking fresh blood -- and it could be yours...[/quote]

That LED moonlight is totes Truman Show.
This show sounds pretty great conceptually. Even if it bombs, it should be fun to watch how that would unfold.

TBH I don't see it bombing, John de Mol is a fricking genius and the fact that he's involved is great (unlike how he pawned off the American version of Big Brother without being directly involved).. they pumped in a shite load of money into this too.. and it takes away everything I hate about big brother (production involvement, feeds that aren't really 24/7). This is just a 100% pure reality show.

I'm gonna check this out for sure but I'm not sold on it.

well, they keep whatever money they earn/are left with when they leave.. each person has their own goals, people get voted out each month, new ones come in, nothing is off limits (within the law in california), they can do whatever they want and it is all shown uncensored on the feeds.. no "fish screens" like big brother. Its a 24/7, 365 day ant farm.

I hope they can't talk about votes/noms if someone is getting booted. I hate that shite about US BB

There are no rules about gameplay, like I said, production isn't on site. There are no confessionals, diary rooms, etc. Like in Big Brother, the Utopia participants nominate fellow inhabitants for elimination in a process in which the viewers also vote to nominate a contestant for elimination. After the vote, three inhabitants land in the danger zone and two aspiring new contestants arrive. One of the two newcomers will quickly have to leave, but the one who gets to stay receives exceptional power; he or she decides which one of the three nominated inhabitants will definitively be eliminated.
