8/3/1914 France and Germany declare War

8/4/1914
During the night Germany invades Belgium.

Germany declares war on Belgium and vice versa.

Belgium's ally Great Britain declares war on Germany.

Each side was confident in the outcome.

Over 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded casualties later, it ended with a surrender leading to WWII.

The war to end all wars . . .

Yeah. For the Euros. Not for "Murka", though.

This board would have opposed entry into WW1.

This thread had potential.
Military channel (which I apparently don't get ) will be running a bunch of high quality documentaries.

Which would be the correct course of action.

In related matters, Google's doodle is for the guy who created the Venn diagram...

Also, for anyone who can read Italian, Il Foglio is running a four-part article by the historian Roberto de Mattei on the start of WWI and its effects.

Well lost to history is the fact that WWI was not a very popular proposition in the US. But I'd challenge the idea that this board would have uniformly opposed the war.

The military channel changed its name to the American Heros Channel.

In 1914?

Really?

You'd lose 200-0.

ETA: 200-1 apparently (sorry to exclude your own vote Navy)

If you ever believed in a outside force determining parts of our future then look no further than here.

The butterfly effect is truly astounding.

Once again foiled by a lack of subtitles.

A little nuance here. Wilson's party initially opposed the war (as did most), but swung behind it after a few key events and Woodrow Wilson's prodding. Of those who voted against the Declaration in Congress, three of six Senators opposed were member's of Wilson's opposition. 2/3 of those opposed in the House were Wilson's opposition.

We hadn't a single member of Wilson's opposition in our delegation or in any statewide office at the time. Wilson won 3/4s of Louisiana's vote in 1912. As he really began spinning us into the war by 1916, he won with 85%.

Yep, and France lost 1/3 of its male population, which is why it is populated with nothing but beta scrubs today.

Poor France. You used to be such badasses.
