I'm fishing Lafitte next week. Will I be able to catch reds on top? I've caught thousands on gold spoons over the years. But have never top water fished for them and know nothing about it. August an OK time of year to try?

Wasn't in lafitte, but I'd say you could tear them up with topwater.

I've done it, but not enough.
They can spit it since the back treble is hard pressed to sink into their scales.

Not if you change the factory hooks out. I changed mine to gamakatsu trebles and it increases your hookup ratio

I've only done it once but it was one of the better bites I've ever watched.

Think about 22"-24" red out of empire by the rocks, hit my top dog jr. like a tomahawk missile.

I caught 10 this morning from 5-35 lbs in the back of grand isle. It's my experience that you need to have mullet present to be successful on topwater . I modify my top dogs by adding weight and changing hooks, it was perfect this morning storms all around a perfect lee shore full of bait. They wanted the dark purple today with all the clouds . Probably missed a dozen other blow ups. Good luck

I've caught them on a top dog Jr by the rocks at the south end of bay Lours in late July. Bread and butter was gold spoon though.
