Duck Hunting 101
Posted on 8/4/14 at 12:45 pm

I have hunted deer and small game most of my life. I'm no outdoor expert but I can do at least a fair job of hunting most animals native to the Southeast. Most of what I learned I learned from my dad. My dad was not a duck hunter and I never had the occasion to do any duck hunting.
Now I have a young daughter and son. I want to teach them what I can about hunting and the outdoors. I know absolutely NOTHING about duck hunting. School me on the sport of duck hunting so that if I ever do get to take them hunting or I get someone to take me I don't look like a complete dumbass!
I am a blank slate. Teach me OB ballers!

Lesson #1: You don't need to buy all the expensive BS that everyone buys to hunt ducks.

Hunting private or public land?

Only hunt where you find ducks. Don't just hunt a spot because it looks good or you heard somebody shot some there. 95% of duck hunting is just being where the ducks want to be.

Do you own a shotgun?
Do you know someone who is willing to take you and show you the ropes up close and personal? I pretty much learned everything about duck hunting I know from my Dad, then practiced and practiced with friends to a point where I felt pretty good about going out to the field/marsh.
There are a lot of things to learn about duck hunting, from where to go to how to go.
All kidding aside, I would inquire with all my buddies who hunt, if you have some, and get them to sit down and give you the rundown, then take you out and give a tutorial in the field/blind.
If not, I would imagine there are plenty of people on the OB that could point you in a direction of learning the ropes. I am too far away to be of personal help, sorry.
Oh, and I have to imagine there are some pretty good books, not to mention Ducks Unlimited that I know from time to time have clinics and you may be able to get one in your local area.Good luck

1. Get ALL of your information from Ducks Unlimited. They are the ultimate authority.
2. ALWAYS BUY THE BEST, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO OVERPAY!
3. LABS, LABS, LABS, LABS.
4. You'll probably need a new truck, preferably a top of the line, fully loaded, King Ranch.
5. Make sure you tell people how much you spend on your equipment.

Brushing your blind and concealment is vastly more important than calling.

bullshite!! You will NOT kill a duck you don't call at. So call at everyone you see for best chances!

DUCK HUNTING FOR DUMMIES
The best way to learn is to find someone who might take you hunting. Do you have any friends or friends of friends who might take you hunting with them? You can learn WAY more from personal experience than from reading, although that can at least cut your learning curve a little.

I admit I know very little about duck hunting. I've been once, but we didn't see much.

Done!
I would probably be hunting public lands because I can't afford private. One of my neighbors does guided duck hunts all around the world (Argentina, Mexico, Canada, etc). I have begged him to take me on a hunt and teach me but he is kind of busy and I don't want to repeatedly ask him to take a grown man hunting to learn to hunt ducks. Honestly, I'm afraid that my friends will laugh at me. I can ask on here because I have anonymity.
Yes, I have several shotguns. I have a Belgian made A-5, an 870 with a Turkey choke on it, A Citori O/U .20 ga for quail hunting.
I just don't want to look like a complete moron if I go with friends/aquaintances. Like, are there certain ones that you should/shouldn't shoot (if so what do you look for)? Do you have shooting lanes or do you call your shot? What should I know about duck hunting etiquette? (I realize some of these questions are probably silly, but that's the point, I don't want to look silly).

Call your credit card companies and ask each to increase your line of credit an additional $20k

You have shooting lanes generally and then you take turns on singles
Don't shoot over someone's head. Don't call if you don't know how
