Is Walmart a true cross section of America?

Or does it just attract the lowest tiers of society?
Was having this discussion last night, and it's my contention that it's a pretty accurate representation of the "average" American. Discuss.

Unfortunately, the answer is "yes".

It attracts the bottom 90-95% of Americans, financially speaking. I would say you're getting a view of the vast range of socioeconomic conditions inside that large portion.
Conversely, if you go into a Nieman Marcus, you will see members of the upper twenty percent and your perception will be altered. They will be cleaner, more attractive, healthier, and more pleasant.

It attracts people who want to save money and don't care if they are buying shite made in China. And yes it attracts the poor.

Another good place to see a cross section of your community is the Office of Motor Vehicles.
Everyone except the bus riders has to come in eventually and mingle with masses.

Do you actively seek out US products?

No...there are people who don't shop there and tend to be wealthier. Also, there are segments of society not represented in the Wal-Mart work force.
For the record, I get my hair cut in the Wal-Mart hair salon, but just shop there when traveling generally...in a Wal-Mart 1-2x per month. In Target about 1x every two months. In Kroger, Dillards, Lowes a lot!

I don't think so.
The average family income is 35k.
Sure there are a lot of middle class people that shop at Walmart, but if you line them all up and find the median it isn't a 32 year old white female with a family income of 35k and one child.

TBH, the wretched refuse stands out. Plenty of normal people shop there, but you don't notice them.
Especially in a smaller town. Wally World is practically the only option in a lot of places, so it doesn't matter if you're on welfare or a millionaire farmer, you have to make the pilgrimage there.

I don't think it is. At least, not at the Baton Rouge Walmarts

While both Walmart and America are terrible, that doesn't mean that one is representative of the other. Their terribleness overlaps in places but, for the most part they are not the same.

Was the redundancy really necessary here?

Where is your TV made? What about the products in your garage? Your appliances? I'll go ahead and answer for you....probably 75% or more comes from China, Mexico, etc.

I don't think cross section is the same as average.
Average american, sure.
Cross section, not so much. There are lots of different classes of people in US that never go to Wal mart.
