According to league sources, an “ominous development” has arisen with sides still “very far apart” in contract negotiations. It has even escalated to the point where the “relationship is on the express lane to being ruined,” a source with knowledge of the situation informed CSNNW.com.

The Suns offered Bledsoe a four-year, $48 million deal with declining salaries each year, two sources said. That proposal was quickly turned down. Bledsoe’s camp is putting a max price tag on the player Suns Head Coach Jeff Hornacek called “a Top-10 player in the NBA in coming years”, another source said.

Phoenix has made it known publicly and repeatedly that they intend to match any offer sheets competitors issue out to Bledsoe. This tactic has succeeded in scaring away any potential suitors so far. However, the effort by the Suns to undermine Bledsoe’s market is what has angered Bledsoe and his reps and led to a standoff in which the relationship is now on the verge of being irreparable, we’re told.

That source being Bledsoe's agent no doubt. We've seen this script play out before. I'm sure many would have called the situation with Gordon "irreparable". He signed an offer sheet and asked us not to match. I guess that never did really get repaired though. Batum is a better example.

quote:

Batum visited Minnesota this week and met with owner Glen Taylor, team president David Kahn and Adelman, and was sold on the franchise's direction and the Twin Cities. Ndiaye said Batum is hoping the Blazers will do for him what the Suns did for Steve Nash, and grant his request to move on to a place where he can be happy and competitive.

"Nicolas said, 'I really respect the Blazers' organization, the Blazers' fans,'" Ndiaye said. "He even mentioned he really loved to be coached by (former assistant) Monty Williams, who was a mentor. But his choice, his heart went to Minneapolis."

Things started to sour for Batum and Portland in January when the Blazers didn't sign him to a long-term extension, saying at the time they considered him a big part of their future but wanted to retain salary-cap flexibility before reaching a deal with him. Ndiaye said Batum felt stifled in Portland's system, and wanted to spend less time standing in the corner and shooting 3-pointers, and more time breaking down defenders off the dribble and getting to the rim.

I don't see why they don't offer him a deal like 2 years 28mil. If he can prove that he can stay healthy then he's worth a max, if not, move on.

I don't think he'd take that even if it were offered. I read that he's worried about his past hx of injuries, so he wants the extra years and guaranteed money now.

Also wonder what is the hold up with Greg Monroe. Looks like he's in a similar boat although I haven't heard what the Pistons offered him.

good find on batum, i'd forgotten about that
restricted FA almost always winds up like this for players in demand...

their "relationship" will be fine

Well then he needs a reality check. I don't think anyone is going to shell out max money on a 5 year deal. He pretty much has three options: take a short deal with a larger salary per season, take a longer deal with smaller salary per season, or play for the QA.

He's got a valid complaint, he just needs to take it up with his union rep, not Phoenix. The restricted free agency process is inherently unfair to RFAs. This isn't a case of him being a diva/spoiled/etc. this is a case of him not realizing that resistance is not only futile, it probably hurts him more than it hurts the team he's lashing out at.

If Bledsoe wants to call Phoenix's bluff, he can tell them he'll take that $4m QO.

Problem is that it leaves a ton of money on the table for him, which is an issue given his injury history.

I agree that RFA is unfair because it can lock a player in a situation they want out of. Financially though I think being a RFA benefits the players. Other teams almost always have to over pay for RFA in order to stop the original team from matching. There's no way Gordon should have been a max player with his injury history but Phoenix submitted the only offer they could that might get them Gordon but we matched anyway. If the teams that could offer Bledsoe a max felt he was worth near the max then he would have an offer to force Phoenix's hand.
