Can I get a general explanation of an Auction formatted league?

I know that people nominate players for auction. How do you determine who nominates in what order? Is there a strategy to nominating certain players? What about Free Agents? I know you have a budget, but anything else? We have a 12 man league that we propose new things at the draft and I'd like to propose changing to an Auction format. Just trying to get some insight so I can relay the information properly.

There was a thread last night about free agency, look at that.
We don't do anything to determine nomination order it is randomly selected. In all reality it doesn't really matter where you are in line to nominate, but there's certainly no rule against doing something to determine nomination order.
Nomination strategy is fairly simple, throw out guys early on that you don't want so others will lose money getting them, and whenever you see that players are going for less than their average, which will happen at some point, try and throw out someone you want to get cheaper.

We use a blind bid format for the free agents. Each person starts with a $200 budget for the season. Highest bid on a free agent gets the player.

You don't even have to do nominations. You could just go down the list of the top 300 or whatever players and do it that way instead of each person picking a player. There's a little bit more of a strategy to nominating players because you could nominate players that you don't want early on, and watch other teams bid away for them.
I like this idea for the actual draft....I think that would be interesting. I don't think I ever want to go back to the traditional waiver wire/free agent pick ups after doing the bids. The blind bid makes it more fair for every team as oppose to just having the bottom feeders of the league getting every decent free agent

I hate this as well, which is why we are changing the way waiver order is handled. I noticed that ESPN has an option to not reset the waiver order each week. I'm not sure how it starts (maybe in reverse draft order) and if you pick up someone you move to the bottom. So if you have the #1 spot you can sit on it until you really want/need someone and he's yours.
